Suzette came into our lives like a storm, literally.
Our team was on the roof of the Shipwreck nightclub (Mantra) getting video shots for Vijay Arjune's "Chale Deka" music video while Hurricane Irene was barreling up the East Coast. The raindrops were starting to fall on our equipment, and Suzette ran into the shot, not knowing that a full video production was happening. She had such an energy that we all felt it was necessary to rewrite the video script to feature her in the video the next day.
From there, it was nothing but laughter. We did a few more music videos; one featured her as a Police officer, and it had everyone in stitches.
It was always a joy to watch her through the lens of the camera. She was quick and would deliver a line immediately with her own pizazz. She brought so much laughter to everyone, and if you were fortunate to be in the same room with her, you'd wonder where all that positive energy came from.
Suzette wanted to be a star, more than anything else, and no one could convince her otherwise, except she convinced me to write a skit for her.
A few months later, a thought came to me during another storm, and the "Problem Child" character was created exclusively for her in the winter of 2016. We produced eight episodes, and she delivered them just as they were written.
If you get a chance to look at them, you'll see how brilliant and funny her deliveries were.
She was a star whose light went dim too early.
Rest in peace, my friend.
You had a big heart and did a lot of charity work behind the scenes, quietly, the way it was meant to be done. I am so sorry that the entire world did not get to experience you the way we did and see what a star you truly were.
You will not be forgotten, Suzette Sooknanan Evans.
