** INCREASING WIND GUSTS, STRONG COLD FRONT **
You may want to hold onto your hats and secure your trash cans tonight into tomorrow afternoon! A strong cold front will blow through the state, bringing down the temperatures and increasing the wind gusts. This will also kick on the lake effect snow machine, with significant snowfall possible in northwestern Pennsylvania, Monday night through Friday. Much of western and central Pennsylvania could also see lighter snowfall amounts. I will have more updates throughout the week regarding the snow potential, so stay tuned...
AREA A: Peak wind gusts 60 - 65 mph. Damaging high winds will blow down trees and power lines. Numerous power outages are expected. High-profile vehicles may have difficulties. Expect unsecured objects to be found in the next town, including your trash cans (which may be across the county line π).
AREA B: Peak wind gusts 50 - 55 mph (isolated to 60). Strong winds may blow down a few trees and limbs, which could lead to scattered power outages. Expect unsecured objects to be blown around. Secure those trash cans!
AREA C: Peak wind gusts 40 - 50 (isolated above 50). Expect the potential for a few limbs and perhaps an isolated power outage or two. Unsecured objects may be blown around.
These high winds will be due to a strengthening low-pressure system to our north. As a low-pressure system strengthens, the pressure gradient force becomes "tighter," and the atmosphere attempts to balance out the forces with higher pressure, which increases the wind gusts. This is why late fall through early spring is the 'windy season'. During the summer, low-pressure systems are significantly weaker. The only wind events in the summer result from strong thunderstorms.
Stay tuned for updates!
