“Comet Neowise”
Comet NEOWISE (C/2020 F3) was discovered on March 27, 2020 by NASA's Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (NEOWISE) mission. The comet was named after its discoverer, the NEOWISE mission. The mission uses the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) space telescope to look for near-Earth objects, like asteroids and comets.
The comet was the brightest comet visible from the Northern Hemisphere since 1997's Hale-Bopp. It was estimated to be traveling at 144,000 miles per hour. The comet made its closest approach to the sun on July 3.
The comet has a long, elliptical orbit, so it will be approximately 6,800 years before NEOWISE returns to the inner parts of the solar system.
