Ron English was the first artist recruited by @lisaprojectnyc and he joined forces with the team again in 2015 for the Lower Manhattan Art Festival. His monumental “Temper Tots,” perched atop a series of murals by L’Amour Supreme and Jeremyville towered over Mulberry Street. The first “Temper Tot” was completed just hours before Hurricane Sandy hit the city and stood as a symbol of resilience. The print edition that the mural inspired is available now - link in bio!

Mourning the loss of the exceptional human rights champion, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, pictured here with Winnie Mandela and Chris Whipple (Melissa’s uncle) who, at the time, was a journalist at LIFE Magazine. I’m sure that you all know how Tutu moved mountains to end Apartheid in South Africa and he didn’t stop there. RIP. We will never forget you and we will never stop honoring you.

California inspiration. Wayne, you will always be one of my favorite painters. RIP. 🙏 Posted @withregram • @berggruengallery We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and artist Wayne Thiebaud. In addition to being an iconic American painter, draftsman, and printmaker, he was a generous and kind person, known as a beloved teacher and inspiration to many. He will be greatly missed.

Both Nzinga and Assata were persecuted revolutionary women of their time. Framed, abused and condemned to lives lived in forgotten solitude. Only to emerge years later self-liberated. Posted @withregram • @imageonenyc Attended the Artist talk between @ceyadams and @garylichtensteineditions last night @wcc.art. Very interesting discussion about the creative and silkscreen process from both artist and printer. Had the opportunity to talk with Cey and Gary at some point after the talk and learned a little more about their collaborative process as well. They def created some beautiful prints full of unique color, texture. and detail. Cool event in a great gallery full of some amazing art from different artist. If you can check it out for yourself do so. Many years ago (2009 to be exact), when my studio was in a barn in Connecticut, Robert Cottingham and I had the opportunity to work together on a portfolio of prints. The entire project took 6 months and it was one of the last times I printed with oil based ink before switching to water based ink. Fantastic memories. It was an honor to work with Bob and he remains a friend to this day.

2022 heralds the 10th anniversary of L.I.S.A. Project NYC, the innovative non-profit organization that, over the course of the past ten years, has been infusing the streets of New York City with murals while simultaneously raising awareness and sparking important conversations around issues relating to social justice, diversity and equality.

In celebration of the occasion, L.I.S.A. Project NYC is unveiling a new silkscreen print release program that will highlight and memorialize several of its historic murals while raising funds to support the evolving programming initiatives of the 501(c)3 organization. Participating artists within the first series include Ron English, Indie184, John “CRASH” Matos and Chris “DAZE” Ellis. Published by West Chelsea Editions, the production process has commenced and we’ll be sharing the details soon — needless to say, it’s an honor to be working with such an amazing group!

11/02/2021

The 149th Street Writers’ Bench, located at the back of the uptown platform in the 2/5 subway station on Grand Concourse, was a meeting place for graffiti writers in the 70s and 80s. Artists congregated at this particular bench, arguably the most popular in NYC, to discover and appraise each other’s work, both on the trains that sped through the station and in the black books they all carried. A visit to the Writer’s Bench became a daily routine for many, including CRASH and Eric, and today it is a reminder of a vibrant and dynamic shift in NYC’s arts landscape and a place where lifelong friendships were made.

Also featured here is the original flyer from “Graffiti Art Success for America” that CRASH curated for Fashion Moda. Thanks for pulling this out of the archive, Eric!

We have some incredible books from Makoto Fujimura Art in our new store. Just in time for holiday gift-giving, be sure to check them out here: https://culture-care-creative.myshopify.com. "Art and Faith: A Theology of Making" is Mako’s broad and deep exploration of creativity and the spiritual aspects of “making.” Beautiful and poignant, it offers the perspective of, in Christian Wiman’s words, “an accidental theologian,” one who comes to spiritual questions always through the prism of art. The special package pictured here includes a copy of "Art and Faith: A Theology of Making" signed by Mako, along with an original print of his artwork (unsigned). Each print - having been hand-selected from a 2020 series of silkscreen monotypes - has been donated by the Artist and his printer, Gary Lichtenstein Editions, to benefit Embers International Inc. 100% of the profit from these sales will be donated to Embers International. Embers International is a nonprofit organization that protects, empowers, and restores the lives of the vulnerable. Through its programs and partnerships in India, Embers International creates sustainable transformation by providing access to opportunities and resources to those who face intergenerational poverty, oppression, and violence. The second book is Golden Sea. This monograph is a beautiful cloth-bound book, embossed with gold detail reminiscent of Fujimura’s Golden Sea painting. Designed by Darilyn Carnes of Abrams Books, it contains images of Fujimura’s paintings throughout his career. Accompanying the images are essays by Dan Siedell, Kei Tatejima, Robert Kushner, Nick Wolterstorff, Gregory Wolfe, Thomas Hibbs, Julie Hamilton, and Roberta Ahmanson. This book also includes a biographical documentary film made by Plywood Pictures, exploring Fujimura’s life and how it influenced the evolution of his artwork throughout his career. The film features interviews with Fujimura, as well as his mentor from Tokyo University of the Arts, art historians, gallerists and colleagues. Music for the film was composed by Susie Ibarra Music and Clayton Fujimura. Two other Plywood Pictures documentaries are also included on the DVD.
