08/20/26 – The driver involved in last month’s near-fatal collision at Ocean and Winfield Avenues has been arrested and charged with leaving scene. 27-year-old Santiago Merna-Gutierrez, of Bayonne, was taken into custody this past Monday, the 17th, by officers from the Hudson County Regional Collision Investigation Unit.

Downtown, 08/17/26 – Two activist rallies competed for attention this afternoon in front of City Hall as bystanders and nearly two dozen JCPD officers and a handful of detectives looked on.
Make Polluters Pay, the much larger assembly, organized by Food & Water Watch- NJ and a coalition of climate action organizations, was drumming up support for the Polluters Pay Act bill being put before the New Jersey Legislature this fall and featured an all-star line-up of speakers from the mayor and two city council members to state assembly persons and leaders of the various organizations.
They were being heckled throughout the event by less than a dozen attendees of the Jersey City Tax Protest, organized by a community organization calling itself Prevailing Sentiment.
Also in attendance were JCPD top brass, reporters from numerous news outlets and a few podcasters.

Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello this morning announced the arrest of a suspect in the fatal shooting at 200 Cornelison Avenue this past Tuesday evening, August 11th.
