This is another from my last visit on 9/12/20. You can really see the effects of beech bark disease in the foreground beech tree. As the trees die and the undergrowth begins to take over. The beautiful flowing sedge disappears.

For the past 2 decades, I have documented the death of the high altitude plant community known as a Beech Gap. Most that have followed my conservation and environmental work have seen or even accompanied me to these wonderful locations. This is from my last visit to the gap in 2020. This is what is left of the trees that you see in my last post. They succumbed to beech bark disease. Maybe I'll post the next group of photographs from this body of work in black and white.

With all of the heavily manipulated and oversaturated natural history photographs continuously displayed on SM and even in print, I find MYSELF almost feeling that the black and white photograph actually presents a more realistic and artful visual representation.

Here's another from my day in Welch that I think works well in black and white. This time I posted the color along with the converted black and white for comparison. It was taken on Kodak Portra 400 and the digital file was converted using Silver Efex Pro.
For my documentary social landscape work, I believe that color is essential. For my natural landscape work, I'm not certain I'll ever shoot color again.

Another vertical? This is a location that my longtime friend @nyesimmonsphotography showed me a few years back. I love this in black & white but it's pretty amazing in color too. I'm looking forward to exposing a few sheets of TMax 400 on this one soon.

My understanding of how black and white color filters manipulate tones and contrast by using Silver Efex Pro is improving. I understand that it's not as precise as what I'll find in the field exposing film and using the actual filters but I'm certain that I'll better understand the process. This is a fall comp and the forest is predominantly yellow.

My long awaited photo book order finally delivered. Alec Soth’s new book “A Pound of Pictures” may be his best ever. I love “Sleeping by the Mississippi” but this new book is truly amazing. Not certain I love the tip-on photograph on the back cover but it’s certainly different and it’s growing on me. You’ll also get a few old photos dropped randomly inside!
My last remaining digital camera is being reclassified as a scanning device for my new point and shoot 😁
