Christine Sweely's Fine Art

Christine Sweely's Fine Art This page is designed to display different oil and watercolor paintings and prints I have prepared to sell. I am also available to paint custom portraits or landscapes upon request.

I am an oil and watercolor painter based in Johnson City, TN. I am a graduate of the Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, PA and have been painting for over 30 years. I am a mother of two children, Carole and Benjamin, and a wife of 32 years to my husband Scott. I adore the natural beauty presented to us in God's creation, and strive to convey that beauty through my artwork.

Years ago I learned a trick to help me to check my work and make adjustments. I turn the portrait up side down. Yes, that's right. When we look at a portrait right side up your brain sees the identity of a person or pet. When you turn it upside down your brain sees not identity but an odd configuration of lines, colors and shapes. When you look at the photo reference it becomes incredibly obvious what shapes are wrong. After painting the adjustment, when you turn it up side again, you're almost guaranteed to see improvement. Isn't that neat?

These pictures highlight the transition with a dog portrait that I am working on. Hoping to have it complete soon.

My Story

I am a landscape and portrait artist based in Johnson City, TN. I have been painting professionally since 1986 when I graduated from Moore College of Art in Philadelphia, PA, with a BFA degree in Illustration. After working as an illustrator in the eighties, my focus has shifted solely to portraits and landscapes. Upon moving to Tennessee in 1991, I have found great inspiration in the beautiful, natural scenery that surrounds us everyday. My work has been exhibited and sold at West Bend Gallery, West Bend, WI, Moore College of Art, Phila., PA, the Palette and Chisel Academy of Fine Art in Chicago, the Arts Depot in Abingdon, VA, the Carroll Reece Museum, Johnson City, TN, Nelson Fine Art, Johnson City, TN, the Root Studio School, Jonesborough, TN, and the Renaissance Center in Kingsport, TN. You can reach me through my page, by e-mail at [email protected], or by phone at (423)-434-0673.
