Raisin, the Record-Breaking Curly

We’re put the finishing touches on our October issue. It contains a wonderful column by Ellen Manes, of the Curly-Coated Retriever Club of America, detailing the career of record-breaking MBIS MRBIS BISS NOHS GCh.G Pizzazz Kurly Kreek Raise a Rukus (Raisin). This summer, Raisin became his breed’s all-time AKC Best in Show winner.

Ellen writes: “The record for the most Best in Show wins, which was five, was held by MBIS BISS Ch. Riverwatch Southern Cross, RN, CGC, bred by Gary and Mary Meek and John Mello, and owned by Gary and Mary Meek and Ann and Conrad Clippert. This record stood for almost 20 years.

“On June 8, 2025, Pizzazz Kurly Kreek Raise a Ruckus broke this longstanding record by going Best in Show at the Skyline Kennel Club under Judge Judith A. Brown. Since reaching that amazing milestone, Raisin and handler Tristen Lawrence have been awarded four more Bests in Show and four Reserve Bests in Show.

“So, let’s give our heartiest congratulations to breeders Iris Andre and Kathy Shifflett, and owners Kathy and Scott Shifflett, on the amazing accomplishments of MBIS MRBIS BISS NOHS GCh.G Pizzazz Kurly Kreek Raise a Rukus.”

We commend the AKC for updating their Code of Sportsmanship and Conduct. Dog shows are about so much more than ribbons… they’re about people, dogs, and the community we all share.

Hopefully our own national breed club, The Curly Coated Retriever Club of America, will follow suit and accept and employ it's own code of ethics.
When clear expectations are set around kindness, respect, and accountability, it raises the bar for what the club and breed culture can feel like for everyone involved. This update would be a meaningful step toward shaping a culture where both dogs and humans are supported, encouraged, and safe.
