Some dementia caregiving habits feel helpful in the moment but can make an already confusing day harder.
Five things we would avoid:
1. Turning every conversation into a correction.
If Mom remembers something differently, arguing may only create more frustration. Respond to the feeling first.
2. Asking, “Do you remember me?”
Try introducing yourself instead. It removes the pressure to come up with the right answer.
3. Choosing care based only on today.
If a move is being considered, ask whether the setting can support changing needs over time.
4. Waiting for a crisis to explore options.
A fall, hospital stay, or sudden change is a difficult time to start researching senior care. Learning what is available earlier gives the family more room to think.
5. Expecting one person to carry everything.
Dementia caregiving can be demanding. Family support, respite care, and professional help are part of a care plan, not a failure of one.
At Golden Concierge, we help Iowa families sort through senior care options, home needs, and the logistics that come with changing care.
The goal is not to do everything yourself. It is to make sure Mom is supported and the family has a plan that can actually last.
