A storm late Saturday night and early Sunday morning caused damage in parts of Joplin and the surrounding area, knocking down trees and limbs, and causing some limited damage to buildings.
As of 11:41 a.m. Sunday, 12,540 Liberty customers remained without power in Southwest Missouri, about half of what the Joplin-based utility said was out power at the peak.
The city of Joplin said its Fire Department was dispatched to many power outage-related calls overnight and helped Public Works map storm damage.
Schifferdecker Pool was without power as of 9 a.m. Sunday and may have to delay opening depending on power restoration by Liberty.
"Our city parks and trails have extensive tree damage with trees down, which will be cleaned up over the next few days. Parks impacted include Schifferdecker, MOmentum, Cunningham, McClelland, Ron Richard, and Leonard. The Frisco trail also has trees down blocking the path in multiple locations," the city said
"Joplin Public Works crews have been out all night clearing debris and trees from streets and public property," the city said in a statement. "Tree debris on private property is the responsibility of property owners for clean up, meaning the city cannot cut up and haul away trees which are not in the public right-of-way.
The city’s tree limb drop-off facility is being used today by city crews to haul debris the city is cleaning up but will not open to the public Sunday to avoid safety issues.
The tree limb drop-off facility will be open to the public from 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday, at 1702 N. Schifferdecker Ave. The facility can only accept tree limbs and brush, no fence or roof or other trash/storm debris, and no grass clippings.
