Over the past few months, several incidents in our area have reminded me how important it is to have trained volunteers available when families, law enforcement, and emergency responders need extra resources during search and rescue operations.
As a Part 107 drone pilot and owner of a local drone business, I’ve seen firsthand how valuable aerial technology can be during search efforts. Because of that, I am exploring the creation of a volunteer-based Search and Rescue Drone Team here in Kansas that could support local agencies when requested.
This would NOT be a business venture. The goal is to build a separate volunteer organization focused on public service, training, professionalism, and supporting our communities during emergencies.
I am looking for serious individuals who may be interested in helping build this organization from the ground up, including:
• FAA Part 107 Drone Pilots
• Public Safety and First Responders
• Emergency Management Personnel
• Amateur Radio Operators
• Search and Rescue Volunteers
• GIS/Mapping Specialists
• Anyone with a genuine interest in serving their community
All members would be expected to pursue FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) training and follow established search and rescue protocols. The long-term goal would be to create a professional, deployable volunteer resource that can work alongside local authorities when requested.
At this stage, I’m simply putting out feelers to gauge interest and connect with like-minded people who are willing to help build something meaningful for Kansas.
