The latest update on the Fraud Investigations Task Force by X Grok:

The Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, chaired by Vice President JD Vance (with FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson as vice chair), is actively investigating and addressing fraud, waste, and abuse in federal benefit programs—such as Medicaid, SNAP (food stamps), childcare, and other means-tested assistance—especially those jointly administered with states.

President Trump established it via executive order on March 16, 2026, as part of a broader “war on fraud” to enforce eligibility rules, improve oversight, data sharing, and pre-payment controls, and potentially withhold federal funds from non-compliant states.

The task force held its first meeting on March 27, 2026, and agencies have deadlines to identify vulnerabilities (30 days), adopt minimum anti-fraud standards (60 days), and submit implementation plans (90 days). It coordinates across DOJ, HHS, Treasury, and other agencies, with a focus on state-level weaknesses like self-certification, poor data sharing, and lax provider oversight.

Current status (as of mid-April 2026)

The task force has made early, high-profile progress. Most notably, around April 8, 2026, it flagged nearly $6.3 billion in federal government contracts awarded to ~400 potentially fraudulent or “ghost” businesses (895 contracts total, with ~$3 billion still to be disbursed). In coordination with the General Services Administration, letters are being sent requiring these entities to prove they have a legitimate physical address and operations within 30 days—or risk contract termination.

Separately, the administration paused roughly $243–259 million in federal Medicaid reimbursements to Minnesota pending a corrective action plan, citing massive estimated fraud (billions in recent years). Minnesota has sued over this.

The effort builds on examples like Minnesota’s Feeding Our Future scandal (~$250 million in fake meal sites and related fraud, with some funds allegedly linked to overseas transfers) and broader issues in state-run programs.

List of states and Hawaii’s status

There is no exhaustive public list of states under active investigation. The executive order spotlights Minnesota as the clearest example of large-scale fraud and weak oversight (e.g., high error rates in food stamps, childcare scams, and possible terror-financing links). It states there is “strong reason to believe similar problems exist” in California, Illinois, New York, Maine, and Colorado, where insufficient safeguards create vulnerabilities. It also notes that Minnesota and 20 other (unnamed) states sued to block federal eligibility reviews for SNAP.

President Trump has publicly said the focus is “everywhere” but primarily on Democratic-led (“blue”) states with histories of lax controls.

Hawaii is not named in the executive order or among the primary example/suspect states.

However, task force vice chair Andrew Ferguson has publicly criticized Hawaii’s oversight, noting that the state has received millions in federal dollars since 2021 specifically to combat Medicaid and Medicare fraud—but has secured zero convictions in that period. This was highlighted alongside similar concerns about California in recent task force-related discussions. Hawaii is therefore on the radar for ineffective fraud-fighting performance, but it is not singled out as a major “pilfering” target like the states listed above.

These efforts are ongoing and expanding; the task force continues to review programs, providers, and state compliance nationwide. Updates often appear in White House releases, Fox News/Daily Caller reporting, or official briefings. No broader list of additional states has been publicly released yet beyond the EO’s examples.
