Qore, LLC, a joint venture between Cargill and German chemical company HELM, has begun producing QIRA, a proprietary corn-based alternative for making 1,4-butanediol (BDO), a chemical component used to manufacture polymers for consumer products and packaging.

Production at the $300 million facility in Eddyville, Iowa, began on July 10, and a grand opening was held July 22 with elected officials, farmers, interactive exhibits, and a panel discussion with company employees, executives and QIRA customers.

The facility will produce 66,000 tonnes of QIRA annually with dent sourced primarily within 100 miles of the site.

“By providing a reliable, renewable, and transparent feedstock, QIRA helps global manufacturers and brands implement identical materials that reduce reliance on oversea supply chains, bringing more transparency to their product portfolios.” - Jon Veldhouse, chief executive officer of Qore.

Global production of agricultural and fish commodities is expected to increase by 14% through to 2034, with cereals growing at an average annual rate of 1.1%, according to the OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2025-2034.

Cereal production will be driven by a 0.9% annual increase in yields as the harvested area is only projected to expand by 0.14%, less than half the 0.33% rate of the previous decade.

The outlook serves as a key global reference on medium-term prospects for agricultural and fish markets at national, regional and global levels.

By 2034, 40% of all cereals will be consumed directly by humans, while 33% will be used for animal feed. Biofuel production and other industrial uses are projected to account for the rest.

The focus of the 2025 hard red winter has shifted north and west to Colorado and Nebraska as combining winds down in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas.

Variability in quality and yields has been a factor in the harvest, with both dependent on environmental factors, US Wheat Associates (USW) said in its latest harvest report.

“In areas that have received more moisture, yields are expected to be higher and protein lower,” USW said. “Areas with excessive moisture at harvest are trending lower for test weight and protein. Producers are closely monitoring isolated reports of disease and pest pressure, including stripe rust, wheat streak mosaic virus and sawfly. Swathing has been reported in areas with high sawfly pressure. Disease pressure remains low in drier areas.”

Combines also were rolling in Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho and Washington, USW said. Average quality was expected from the Pacific Northwest and Montana winter wheat, which is near the end of development. In the latter state, lower yields were anticipated due to dry conditions.

The Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced it is now accepting applications for the upcoming mission to Mexico City, , Nov. 3-6. Interested US exporters have until July 31 to apply.

Mexico is a dynamic market for US exports, with the destination being the largest for US agricultural products in 2024. Sales totaled more than $30 billion, supporting approximately 190,000 US jobs.

According to the USDA, last year, agricultural trade between the United States and Mexico under the United States-Mexico-Canada agreement (USMCA) reached nearly $79 billion and has shown consistent growth over the past decade.

The United States also is Mexico's top supplier of , and .

The Mexico trade mission is part of USDA’s broader 2025 export promotion strategy that includes other recent trade missions to Thailand, Guatemala, Hong Kong and Peru.

production in South Africa is positioned for continued growth in marketing year 2025-26 supported by stable planting area, higher anticipated yields and a slight shift to yellow corn two years after a drought-reduced crop.

Production is projected by the FAS to reach 16 million tonnes in 2025-26, up 4% from 15.4 million tonnes in 2024-25 and significant improvement from 13.4 million tonnes in 2023-24. Corn planting area will remain stable at 3 million hectares in 2025-26, spanning May 2026 to April 2027, due to declining corn prices.

South Africa consumes both white and yellow corn, each serving distinct purposes for the country of nearly 65 million people.

Corn exports for 2024-25 are expected to be 1.5 million tonnes while FAS projects South Africa’s corn exports to increase by 13% in 2025-26, reaching 1.7 million tonnes, supported by the anticipated growth in production.

Bühler Group recently announced a new Vocational Fast Track, allowing customers to send employees to Bühler for several weeks or months to complete a compact apprenticeship based on the Swiss model.

Classroom instruction at Bühler’s in-house training center, Bühler Energy Center, is closely combined with hands-on experience in real production environments.

Participants can take part in modules in mechanics, mechatronics and project management. Depending on specific needs, additional training in process technology also is offered.

These programs specifically are designed for service technicians and maintenance personnel and include health and safety courses in line with Swiss standards. Each module concludes with a recognized Swiss certificate.

EU winter crop yield expectations are above average in several countries while a lack of rain and high temperatures are hampering development of summer crops in southeastern , according to the latest Joint Research Centre MARS Bulletin.

Winter crop yield expectations are above average for Romania, Bulgaria, France, Spain, Ireland, the Nordic countries and the Baltic countries, thanks to a sufficient water supply along the season.

Around-average yields are expected in Germany, Poland and Hungary. Only in Italy and Turkey are reduced yields due to heat and water stress likely.

When Ag Processing Inc.’s (AGP) newest soybean processing and degumming facility in David City, Nebraska, becomes fully operational it will be processing over 50 million bushels of and producing nearly 700 million pounds of degummed oil annually.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 17 celebrated the facility’s grand opening with AGP cooperative members, state and local officials, and agricultural industry representatives. Operations at AGP’s 11th soybean processing facility are expected to begin at the end of August.

“With so many of our existing members in this area, the David City location is not only a great fit with our mission to serve the cooperative system, but it is also a perfect addition to AGP’s existing Midwestern processing platform and, we strongly believe, it will improve our ability to compete in the domestic and international markets.” - Dean Thernes, board chairman, AGP.

21/07/2025

Maize and other cereal grains are vital to the global food supply, serving as staples for billions of people and essential components of animal feed.

However, these crops increasingly are contaminated by , toxic secondary metabolites produced by fungi under stress conditions.

While aflatoxins remain among the most well-known, other toxins such as deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisins (FUM), ochratoxin A (OTA), zearalenone (ZEN), and the T-2 and HT-2 toxins also are raising concern across the food industry.

Removing mycotoxins once present is difficult. Unlike biological hazards, mycotoxins cannot be eliminated by high-temperature treatment or cooking. Instead, mitigation relies on careful post-harvest management and multistep mechanical cleaning, often customized to the dominant toxins in a region.

While many cleaning solutions rely on indirect visual markers, Bühler Group’s LumoVision takes a fundamentally different approach. It uses fluorescence-based detection to identify and remove grains contaminated with mycotoxins directly.
