What is inside the cave?

Gate of the Infinite (1910) is a mysterious painting by the British artist Legh Mulhall Kilpin (1853–1919).

The various elements in this painting help to guess what could be inside the cave. There are two statues at the entrance, one seems to be contemplative, while the other stretches the arm out in some kind of blessing. The red poppies in the foreground are often associated with death. And the tree on the left also does not indicate much life.

And then there is the person in the boat with his arms folded. Is he transporting people into the cave? Or are the people arriving from inside the cave, and does that explain why the person is looking expectantly at the entrance?
