TERROR ATTACK ON NIGER AIRPORT LEAVES DOZENS DEAD
At least 13 people, including 11 soldiers and two civilians, were killed after heavily armed militants launched a deadly attack on Diori Hamani International Airport in Niamey, Niger, on June 18, 2026.
According to reports, security forces engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle that lasted several hours before regaining full control of the airport. Authorities said 22 assailants were killed during the operation.
The Al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) has claimed responsibility for the attack, which targeted one of Niger's most important strategic facilities. The incident is the latest in a series of escalating jihadist attacks across the Sahel region, raising concerns about the growing threat posed by extremist groups.
This barbaric act must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Terrorism remains one of the greatest obstacles to peace, stability, and development in Africa. The deliberate targeting of civilians, security personnel, and critical infrastructure is an attack on the future of the continent itself.
Africans must stand united against terrorism and against all individuals, groups, and foreign interests seeking to destabilize the continent through violence, fear, and division. No political, religious, or ideological cause can justify the murder of innocent people.
Our thoughts are with the families of the victims, and we commend the bravery of the security forces who risked their lives to protect others. Africa's progress depends on peace, security, and unity, and we must remain resolute in defending these values against every threat.
