During the wedding, a small girl came over with a bouquet of daisies and asked for a coin… the bride spotted something odd in her hair, and she couldn’t move.....
On my wedding day, as my new husband, Michael, and I sat in our limousine, a little girl knocked on the window. She was thin, poorly dressed, and timidly offered us a bouquet of daisies. My heart went out to her, so I bought the flowers, and then I saw it.
A small, flower-shaped hair clip glimmered in her tangled hair. My heart stopped. It was my grandmother's hair clip, a precious heirloom I had lost years ago during a dark time in my life.
"Where did you get that hair clip?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady.
"I found it on the sidewalk," the little girl answered innocently. "I thought it was pretty."
A restaurant full of guests was waiting, but a strange feeling told me I couldn't just leave this child, Nicole. With Michael's loving agreement, we brought Nicole to the reception with us, despite the surprised whispers of our guests. There, I learned she was an orphan who lived on the streets, selling flowers to survive.
My heart ached for her. I had her sit next to me, personally fixing her a plate of food. But the image of the hair clip consumed my thoughts. Something wasn't right.
As the party went on, I leaned toward Nicole. "Nicole," I whispered, "can you tell me just a little more about the hair clip? It's just so very special."
The little girl looked at me, her eyes clear, and shook her head. "Actually... I didn't find it. An old woman gave it to me."
A knot formed in my chest. "An old woman? Who was she?"
"I don't know," Nicole replied. "She looked very sad. She told me to keep it safe and give it to the first bride I saw today. She also said... she said the bride would know what to do next."....
