After beloved former KC Current coach Vlatko Andonovski parted ways with the Current a few days ago, publications are starting to pick up on the idea that there's more here than meets the eye.
Jeff Kassouf of ESPN pointed out that the statement the Current released was "strangely short" and stated "I don't think we have to read between too many lines to see that they're not [probably] thrilled about this. Both the action itself and [maybe] the way it was announced and handled".
Daniel Sperry of The Kansas City Star very poignantly stated the obvious issue: "On Tuesday, the Kansas City Current made more than 20 posts across its social media accounts. None of the posts included the teamβs news release announcing sporting director Vlatko Andonovskiβs departure by βmutual agreement.""
But Sperry went on to talk about something that we'd like to focus on and that's the fact that the Kansas City Current have had five different general managers in five seasons.
It is growing increasingly clear that the Long's have had quite the tough time getting along with - or if we're being more charitable - finding the right fit for the general manager position. This raises questions as to just how much say they want the general manager to have. And in a year where you let Claire Hutton go in the offseason and proceed to bleed without a #6 and make a change at head coach by hiring your close friends college roommate... well, feel free to draw your own conclusions there.
At the end of the day, ownership needs to ask themselves what's important. Is it your $1.4 billion luxury "culinary hub" or is it winning?
Because without any say, the citizens of Kansas City are funding their $125 million stadium expansion. And if they keep making decisions like this...
They're going to have a hard time filling up those 18,000 seats.
