While Americans across the country remember the tragic terrorism 25 years ago on 9/11, many students are learning to define “Islamophobia” and “stereotype” in classrooms.

Approximately 40 states offer some policy on 9/11 education in elementary and secondary schools, according to AP News. But the content of the curriculum differs drastically from state to state and school district to school district. Students living in nearby ZIP codes may discuss radically different topics during 9/11 instruction.

The Illinois Board of Education offers an “Inclusive Calendar” for teachers with links to 9/11 materials such as “Countering Islamophobia.” This curriculum, from the Southern Poverty Law Center – a radical leftist nonprofit that designates Christian and conservative organizations as “hate groups” – includes two handouts for high school students: “Debunking Misconceptions about Muslims and Islam” and “Hijabs in Europe.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and New York Democratic Rep. Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez were seen smiling and laughing while the names of those who died on 9/11 were being read at a memorial service Friday for the 25th anniversary of the event.

The moment, caught on video, took place while names starting with the letter L were being read, or midway through the list of the nearly 3,000 people who died.

Others wept while the pair of politicians smiled and shared a brief laugh, prompting Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, to ask, “How the hell do you laugh while the names of those murdered on 9/11 are being read aloud?”

Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and a Muslim, had been asked by some of the families not to attend.
