Every Monday and Wednesday night, Tenorio and his company EZ Skate Co. light up the Kapolei and Mililani skate parks with lights that are a beacon, attracting skaters from across the island.

Next year’s Punahou Carnival will not have any E.K. Fernandez thrill rides or games.

And neither will carnivals at other schools. Iolani and Mililani High have also been informed of the change.

In a letter sent out to families, Punahou School said the highly anticipated carnival will be open to the public next year, but rides will be limited to kiddie rides.

Properties are scrambling to fill more than 500 positions in Waikiki hotels to prepare for the return of Japanese visitors, business conferences and the holiday travel season.

“Where have all the workers gone? I still don’t know the answer,” said Chip Rogers, president and CEO of the American Hotel & Lodging Association.

“There’s a lot of people who aren’t working and you can see it in the numbers.”

Like many businesses in today’s economy, hotels are struggling with a labor shortage and an aging workforce. AHLA hopes better benefits and potential for career growth will entice new hires for the holiday travel season.

On Saturday, Oct. 1 around 8:39 a.m. HFD said they received a 911 call about a fire at the Kapolei Rail Station.

A new report from the University of Hawaii released Friday predicts the U.S. economy will enter a recession in the coming months. But, there’s a glimmer of hope for Hawaii.

The forecast from the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO) said the nation is heading toward a mild recession in the first half of next year as the global economy slows sharply.

The state’s COVID figures don’t include positives from at-home tests, so the real number is likely far higher.

The latest number brings the statewide total since the start of the pandemic to 343,204.

Meanwhile, the additional fatalities bring the state’s COVID death toll to 1,679.

The state now issues its COVID data on a weekly rather than daily basis.

A dog that was brought to a Kapolei animal care clinic by a good Samaritan after being hit by a car on Tuesday has died.

Veterinarians tried to save Nakoa, but he couldn’t make it.

Paws of Hawaii said the dog was found with two bullets lodged in its body, including one that severed his spine.

Don Quijote’s owner – Pan Pacific International Holdings - filed building permits Friday to build its newest store in Kapolei in West Oahu.

Located in the old Kmart building at 500 Kamokila Blvd., the new store will be the Japanese-based retailer’s fourth store in the Islands. It already has stores in Honolulu, Pearl City and Waipahu.

Don Quijote filed a sitework and building permit, both with an estimated value of work of $10 million for its new store in Kapolei.

swimmer is recovering from injuries caused by a Hawaiian Monk Seal at Kaimana beach. The seal, Rocky, has been at the beach since giving birth to pup two weeks ago. Beach goers at Kaimana Beach said they heard Rocky panicking in the morning – barking back and forth looking for her pup. After 5 minutes, they said she found her pup near the Natatorium.
