On the last night of October, the world feels different.

The air sharpens. The light fades early.
And beneath the laughter and costumes, something ancient still stirs.

Long before Halloween had a name, it was Samhain: a night of fire, fear, and thin boundaries between the living and the dead.

In this week’s episode, we trace how that night evolved through centuries of ritual, religion, and rumor…from Celtic bonfires to witch hunts, séances, and even modern crimes still tied to the date.

Because the past doesn’t leave us, it walks beside us, just beyond the circle of firelight.

⚡️On March 17, 1978, residents of Bell Island, Newfoundland were shaken by a deafening blast.

• Witnesses described a blinding flash followed by a massive shockwave that shattered windows and knocked out power (CBC News archives, 1978).

• Investigators found melted fuses, scorched appliances, and even livestock killed without fire damage, effects consistent with an enormous electromagnetic pulse (Newfoundland Historical Society, 1980).

• Within days, a team from Los Alamos National Laboratory quietly arrived on the island. Their sudden visit fueled speculation of secret weapons testing or something even stranger (Toronto Star, March 1978).

• Even U.S. Vela satellites (built to detect nuclear detonations) registered the event, though no weapon was ever admitted.

Main theories:

• EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) weapons test: Cold War experiments gone wrong.

• Soviet satellite malfunction: a secret crash or beam strike.

• Tesla-inspired energy discharge: modern echoes of his “death ray.”

• UFO encounter: unexplained energy blast frying the grid.

• Ball lightning/plasma: rare natural event, but on an unprecedented scale.

🪐 On September 21, Alberta skies will showcase Saturn at opposition: its brightest point all year.

Earth will be perfectly aligned between the Sun and Saturn, making the ringed planet glow golden in the east after sunset. With binoculars or a small telescope, you’ll see its iconic rings.

Even with the naked eye, Saturn will shine brighter than usual, steady against the stars. For millennia, Saturn has symbolized time, endings, and thresholds, fitting for this season of transition.

Mark your calendar: this is one of the year’s best nights for skywatching.

“When my son was an infant, I used a baby monitor every night. One evening, I heard singing. Low, almost like a lullaby. My blood ran cold. I ran into his room: no one there, just my baby asleep. The monitor kept picking up whispers on different nights, never clear enough to make out words. I eventually got rid of it. But sometimes when the house is quiet, I don’t know if it’s me being paranoid, but I feel like I can still hear the humming.”

🌕Corn Moon Recap (Sept 7, 2025)

🔭On September 7, Alberta skies glowed with the Corn Moon, September’s full moon (this year).

Normally, September’s full moon is called the Harvest Moon, but not this year. The Harvest Moon is defined as the full moon closest to the autumn equinox (Sept 22). In 2025, that honor goes to October’s full moon on Oct 6–7.

So instead, September’s full moon carried its older name: the Corn Moon, a signal of ripening crops and the last weeks of summer.

Folklore ties the Corn Moon to preparation and transition: a liminal moment when communities gathered harvests and watched the season’s shift toward darker nights. Some traditions even connect it to heightened spiritual activity, a stirring of things just beyond the edge of light.

📞 Anonymous, 31 from Calgary, Alberta calls in:

“When I was a kid, I used to walk home from school along a wooded trail. It was peaceful, a shortcut between the houses and the main road. One late autumn afternoon, I noticed something unusual—someone had hung small trinkets on a tree along the path. They were odd little things: rusted keys, tiny porcelain figurines, and old glass bottles tied up with faded ribbon. At first, I thought it was someone’s forgotten art project, but they were arranged too precisely, almost like they were meant to be offerings.

I brushed it off until I started seeing that tree in my dreams. Every night, it appeared exactly as I’d seen it in the woods, but there was always something different. Sometimes I’d hear whispers coming from it. Other times, I’d see shadowy figures standing around it, motionless. It got so bad that I started going a different route to school, and even years later, the image of that tree still creeps into my thoughts. I never found out who hung the trinkets there or why they were placed so deliberately. I just know that the feeling I got when I saw them—like I was intruding on something—never went away.”

🛸The Kecksburg UFO Incident

On the night of December 9, 1965, witnesses across six states reported seeing a fireball streak across the evening sky, trailing a long tail of smoke. It appeared to crash into the woods near Kecksburg, Pennsylvania. Local residents and those who witnessed it across the state quickly gathered at the site, and authorities arrived soon after.

Many reported seeing a bell-shaped metallic object, covered in strange symbols (what looked like hieroglyphs) —partially buried in the ground. Military trucks and soldiers arrived, blocking access to the object. Witnesses claim the strange object was hoisted onto a flatbed and covered with tarps.

The military later insisted the event was simply a meteor burning up in the atmosphere, but no fragments, burns, or impact craters consistent with a meteor were ever found. The official record remains vague, and any evidence of what really fell from the sky was never revealed to the public.

To this day, the Kecksburg UFO incident remains one of the most well-known cases of an alleged extraterrestrial craft recovery. (Source: Leslie Kean, UFOs: Generals, Pilots, and Government Officials Go On the Record, 2010)

🌕 On March 14, 2025, a total lunar eclipse, often referred to as a “Blood Moon,” will be visible across North America, including Edmonton, Alberta.

Since it’s the full moon in March, it’s also called the “Worm” moon!

This phenomenon (Blood Moon) occurs when the Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, casting a shadow that gives the Moon a reddish hue. The eclipse will begin at 11:56 p.m. ET on March 13, with totality occurring at 2:55 a.m. ET on March 14.

Throughout history, Blood Moons have been linked to various superstitions and paranormal beliefs. Some cultures viewed them as omens of significant events or disasters, while others believed they signified a thinning veil between the physical and spiritual realms, making it a prime time for supernatural occurrences.

We at Midnight Mysteries believe there’s definitely something more going on than just natural phenomena!

Whether you’re a skywatcher or a paranormal enthusiast, this celestial event is not to be missed. Remember to mark your calendars and share your Blood Moon experiences with us!

Remember, stay weird.

📞Lydia, 34 from Portland, Oregon calls in:

“Three times now, I’ve noticed a jet-black cat in the moments just before something bad happens.

The first time, I was walking home after dark, and there it was, sitting in the middle of the sidewalk.

It scared me for a second, its eyes were reflecting the streetlights and really glowing. I stopped, and for a moment, it just stared at me. Then it padded off into the dark. Not thirty seconds later, I heard the awful screech of tires. A car missed a cyclist by inches, and I could hear them shouting almost all the way back home.

The second time was at work. I glanced out the window and saw that same black cat sitting by the loading dock. Later that afternoon, our entire system went down—every server offline without warning. The office was in a panic for hours, freaking out running around trying to get things back up. I couldn’t shake the feeling that cat had been some kind of warning.

The third time was the worst. I was loading my car for a trip, running late, when the cat darted out from behind a bush. I swear it stopped right in my path for a heartbeat, its tail flicking before it ran off. My chest tightened. I don’t know why it messed with me so much. Not an hour later, my tire blew out in the middle of nowhere. There was no one around, no cell service. I sat there in the dark, stranded, thinking about that cat. It’s been months now, and I still can’t explain it. But I know what I saw.”
