Our take on wedding documentary video:
Defining a documentary-style format is one of the most debated and subjective subjects in the wedding videography business. Some clients envision the documentary video as a variant of the popular reality show My Fair Wedding. Hence, the term "documentary" can be a bit misleading. Wedding documentaries produced in TV Land are more about the bride and WAY less about everyone else, including the groom. Here in consumer-wedding-video-land, documentary has a different meaning. It's basically labor intensive video of any and everything organized chronologically. Because "good" videographers are shooting for both events and details, one must imagine the difficulty trying to produce a piece that "follows" the bride and groom every step of the way while trying to capture the rest of the things going on. It is definitely possible, but would require way more manpower and cameras than one would think. The package price would increase exponentially! Just imagine that 2 videographers are filming the bride with her bridesmaids and the groom is being filmed on the other side of the venue with his groomsmen. All of a sudden the long lost brother walks in for a surprise visit after being deployed to Iraq, dinner is being served, the flower girl and ring bearer are doing the cutest kiss, granny just threw aside her walker and is dancing for the first time in 10 years, and you still need to shoot the wedding rings next to the cake... Yes, welcome to the life of a wedding videographer. Most bride's budgets only allow for 2 videographers, so being everywhere at once is a huge challenge. Ironically it is not as demanding for the photographer who is mobile, doesn't have to worry about people standing in front of the camera, uses a flash to illuminate his subjects, and only has to snap one photo to capture the entire moment. One photographer could easily cover an event with 300+ guests. An unwanted photo can be discarded, unlike video which captures the good, the bad, and the ugly. There are numerous factors that go into producing great wedding video, which is a good topic for a future blog. One quick way is to remove everything that the editor thinks would be undesirable to the client. But who are we to assume? We've had clients that didn't want to see anyone else but them in the video. On the other hand, I recently worked with a client that wanted to see what everyone else was doing behind the scenes. The ultimate point to this blog is that creative services do have a great deal of subjectiveness to it and many times creative services turn to directive services, which should rarely be the case. And not to attack the client, but they need to understand what they are getting prior to signing the contract. And any additional requests should be understood and negotiated up front so there are no surprises when their DVDs arrive in the mail.
