It’s stories like this that make me advocate daily for my nonverbal son. ❤️💙💚💛

The calls from Field Elementary in Louisville, Kentucky kept coming, but nothing the school said about her son matched the little boy she knew at home.

Tiphanee Lee is the mother of Semaj, a 7-year-old with severe nonverbal autism. Because Semaj cannot speak, he could not tell her what his days at school were actually like. When his behavior seemed off, and the school denied her request to sit in and observe his class, she had to find another way to get answers.

She clipped a small hidden camera inside his dreadlocks and sent him to school on May 13.

What the recording captured led to abuse allegations against a staff member at the school. Audio from that day includes a staff member speaking aggressively to Semaj, using a racial slur, and calling him "boy." Semaj can be heard screaming toward the end of the recording. The footage also raised questions about whether other adults in the room failed to step in.

Jefferson County Public Schools confirmed it is investigating alongside Child Protective Services. The staff member has been removed from the building while the investigation continues. At a press conference, Tiphanee spoke directly about the trust that was broken. "We trusted his school to protect him, to care for him, and to treat him with dignity," she said. "Instead, he was harmed, silenced, and failed."

Tiphanee is now calling on the district to install cameras in all classrooms that serve nonverbal and special needs students.

If Semaj could tell you in his own words what happened to him that day, what do you think he would most need the adults in his life to understand?

Today, we honor the mothers who show up every single day with strength, patience, and unwavering love.

To every mom raising a child with a disability or special needs, we see you. Your journey may look different, but your impact is immeasurable. You have been entrusted with a unique and powerful assignment, and you are doing an incredible job, even on the days it feels heavy.

Please remember, you are not alone in this. There is a community walking alongside you, cheering you on, and lifting you up.

And most importantly, your children see you. They feel your love. They appreciate every sacrifice, every moment, every ounce of care you pour into them.

Happy Mother’s Day to the ones who love beyond limits. 💙

It’s time for Karson Kares feature of the week! This feature is near and dear to my heart, because she happens to be my niece.

Karson Kares family let’s celebrate Kelsi Simone Brown!

❤️💙💚💛❤️💙💚💛❤️💙💚💛
Kelsi Simone is an inspiring 11-year-old 5th grader whose story is one of strength, resilience, and quiet determination. Born prematurely at just 1 pound, 14 ounces, Kelsi entered the world already defying the odds.

At the age of 7, she was diagnosed with Autism, along with ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder. Since then, her journey has been supported by unwavering advocacy from her mom, who ensured Kelsi received the care and resources she needed through occupational therapy, speech therapy, and ABA therapy.

Because of that dedication and Kelsi’s own inner strength, she continues to grow and thrive. She carries a calm, gentle presence, with a sweet spirit that shines through in everything she does. Above all, Kelsi deeply loves her family, and that love is returned tenfold.

Kelsi’s journey is a powerful reminder that progress looks different for every child, and that with support, patience, and love, anything is possible.

People are quick to judge a journey they’ve never had to walk.

They haven’t felt the sleepless nights, the silent tears, the overwhelming anxiety, or the constant fight to advocate for a child who sees the world differently. Yet somehow, they always have opinions on what they would do.

But the truth is—until you live this life, you don’t fully understand it.

So before you judge, take a moment to learn.
Educate yourself. Listen. Lead with compassion.

Because behind every Autism journey is a family doing their absolute best. 💙

This month KarsonKares will be featuring an Autism family each week as we continue to raise awareness.

Meet James(written by his Mom Tamara)

My son, James Phillips III, is an amazing 12-year-old who fills every room with joy and laughter. He was diagnosed with autism at the age of five, and since then, he has continued to grow into a strong, loving, and unique young man. James sees the world in his own special way, and that’s what makes him so incredible.
He has a big love for football, enjoys laughing, and truly cherishes spending time with his sister and friends. His favorite color is blue, and his personality shines just as bright. One thing about my baby—he can eat! His appetite is just another part of his fun, lively spirit.
James has a deep love for his family—he absolutely loves his mom (his twin, because he looks just like me!) and his dad. The bond he shares with us is something truly special and full of love.
James teaches me every day what unconditional love, patience, and strength really look like. I am beyond proud of the young man he is becoming, and I know his future is full of endless possibilities.

James academically is in gifted and talented as well as AVID in which he makes A and Bs. He learn differently.

James definitely gonna speak his mind😩🤣😉

Easter looks different in every home, and for autism and special needs families, that difference matters.

Your Sunday may not include a packed church, loud music, or long services. Sensory overload is real. The sounds, the crowds, and sitting still for extended periods can be overwhelming for our children, and that’s okay.

If your family needs to worship from home this Easter, that is still meaningful. If large family gatherings feel like too much and you choose a smaller, more peaceful setting, that is perfectly valid.

Do what supports your child’s mental and emotional well-being. Give yourself grace and embrace the life God has called you to live.

From KarsonKares, we’re wishing your family a peaceful, joyful, and love-filled Easter Sunday. 💛

I love someone with autism; and that love has changed the way I see the world. 💙

It has taught me patience, deeper compassion, and how to celebrate progress in ways others may overlook. It’s shown me that communication isn’t one-size-fits-all, and that every voice, spoken or unspoken deserves to be heard.

Autism is not a limitation. It’s a different way of experiencing the world… and it is beautiful.

April 2nd is recognized as World Autism Awareness Day… but in our home, every single day is a day to understand, advocate, and celebrate. 💙

Autism is part of our everyday life: the beautiful moments, the challenges, the growth, and the unconditional love that shapes who we are. It’s in the small wins that feel like big victories, the lessons that teach us patience, and the joy that comes from seeing the world through a different lens.

We don’t just raise awareness, we live it. We honor it. We embrace it.

Because every day, we’re reminded that different minds create a more colorful, compassionate, and powerful world.

April is more than a month: it’s a reminder to see, hear, and celebrate every unique mind.

Autism isn’t something to “fix.” It’s something to understand, embrace, and support. Every child, every individual, deserves to be valued for exactly who they are: brilliant, different, and beautifully made.

Everyday we choose awareness, acceptance, and action. We choose patience. We choose love. We choose to create a world where differences are not just accepted, but celebrated.

Because different isn’t less… it’s powerful!

Christmas may look different for Autism families, and that difference is beautiful. Our traditions are built around what brings our children peace, joy, and comfort, not what the holidays are “supposed” to look like. Create the memories that work for your family, you’re not alone.
