Join us as we continue our Nevada adventure down the legendary Extraterrestrial Highway to the tiny town of Rachel, Nevada—the gateway to Area 51!

We make stops at the famous Little A'Le'Inn and the Alien Cowpoke gas station before heading out to explore both the back gate and front gate of the mysterious Area 51. After a day of exploring, we find an epic campsite just about a mile from the front gate and set up camp in the blazing 90+ degree desert heat.

As the evening rolls in, we enjoy a great dinner, a couple of cold beers, and an incredible night of stargazing in one of the darkest skies in America. But the excitement doesn't stop there! A pair of glossy snakes wander into camp, keeping us on our toes before bedtime.

Throughout the night, we have several drive-bys from the infamous "camo dudes" who patrol the area. Then at 4:00 AM, things get even more interesting when they roll in close, blasting their horn and peeling out around our campsite! It was unexpected, hilarious, and definitely made for a memorable night camping near Area 51.

The next morning, the desert heat arrives fast, so we pack up camp and head to Las Vegas for much-needed showers, pool time, and plenty of cold beers.

to 2023 when we first hit the Extraterrestrial Highway and Brian convinced himself he was going to casually stroll past the Area 51 perimeter to make friends with some aliens. 👽🛸

Spoiler alert: It did NOT work out that way. 😂 Let’s just say after crossing the line, he was met with a whole lot of gunfire on him! 💥🏃‍♂️💨 Extreme reality check.

​But fast forward to right now... we just went back. And this time, we brought the whole overlanding rig and spent the night camped just a mile from the front gate. ⛺️🌵

​Did we see anything weird in the night sky? Did Brian try his luck again? 🤫

👽 CAMPING 1 MILE FROM AREA 51 FRONT GATE!!

​We took the legendary Extraterrestrial Highway to Rachel, NV, stopping at the iconic Little A'Le'Inn and the Alien Cowpoke before scouting the front and back gates of Area 51.

​We set up camp just a mile from the front gate in 90°+ desert heat. The reward? Epic stargazing under some of the darkest skies in America, a couple of cold beers, and some unexpected camp visitors (a pair of glossy snakes! 🐍).

​But the real wild card? The infamous "camo dudes." After patrolling all night, at 4:00 AM they rolled right up to our campsite, blasted their horn, and peeled out! 🚨😂

​Beating the desert heat the next morning, we packed up and high-tailed it to Vegas for a pool day and a hot shower.

🛸 PLAYING HIDE-AND-SEEK WITH THE AREA 51 CAMO DUDES 👽

​Spent the night camped one mile from the front gate, and the infamous "Camo Dudes" did not let us sleep.

​It was a total mix of being incredibly annoyed and absolutely thrilled. All night long: headlights on the ridge, high beams flashing, and white trucks rolling up just to remind us we were being watched.

​Psychological warfare? Top tier. Sleep? None. Coolest, most surreal desert experience ever? 100%. 10/10 would get intimidated by secret government security again.

Join us as we continue our 2026 Southwest Overlanding Road Trip with an adventure to Nevada's incredible Lunar Crater! 🌋

Our journey starts by exploring several volcanic craters before making our way to what looked like the perfect campsite right on the rim of Lunar Crater. The views were absolutely unreal... but things took an unexpected turn when we discovered a not-so-friendly visitor hiding in the rock fire pit — a rattlesnake! 🐍

With our campsite suddenly feeling a little less inviting, we packed everything up and moved about a mile down the road to another amazing spot on the crater with equally epic views. After settling in, we kicked back with a few cold beers and watched the sun sink below the Nevada desert horizon.

As night fell, it was time for steak bites and potatoes, followed by an evening around our Howl Campfire under some of the darkest skies in Nevada. The stars put on an incredible show, and we even witnessed a few things in the sky that left us scratching our heads.

We wrapped up the night in our Kali King Rooftop Tent and woke up to a slow desert morning. Breakfast quesadillas, fresh coffee, and some incredible views made for the perfect start to the day. Before heading out, we shared the fascinating story of how Lunar Crater was formed along with some interesting history about this unique volcanic landscape.

Then it was time to pack up and continue our Southwest adventure to the next destination!

The view is always worth the dust. 🏜️✨

​It’s easy to get caught up in the routine, the screens, and the comfort of four walls. But nothing resets the mind quite like wide-open horizons and a sky full of stars. Out here, there’s no Wi-Fi, no notifications, and no noise—just room to breathe and remember what actually matters.

​If you’ve been waiting for a sign to pack up the rig, leave the pavement behind, and find some dirt… this is it. Go find your middle of nowhere. 🗺️⛺️
