The Kennesaw State University Press
will permanently close on February 28, 2015.

Thank you to all who have supported the Kennesaw State University Press over the last decade. It has been our honor to publish the manuscripts of our many talented authors and we will certainly miss our friends in the publishing industry as well as the staff of hundreds of small bookstores all over the country.

Sadly, it is time for us to close our doors and re-direct our talents to other endeavors.

We had a great run in the publishing world with our authors and publications having won literary awards including the Georgia Author of the Year Award, the Lillian Smith Award, Atlanta Magazine’s Critics Choice Award, Georgia’s Top 25 Reading List, The Georgia Center for the Book’s All Georgia Reads. Among our authors were a former Georgia Poet Laureate, finalist for ForeWord Magazine’s Book of the Year Award, and finalist for the National Book Award.

Ruth and Ruby Crawford have been friends and supporters of mine for many years and were a mainstay of the Peanut Brigade in 1976. They are remarkable women who achieved success and respect in business during a time when this was uncommon for women. They continue to brighten any occasion with their wit, intelligence, and colorful matching dress. They are great supporters of many worthwhile causes and are a valuable resource for Georgia.

Georgia Southern University is a powerhouse in Division I-AA football; with six national titles to its credit, the university’s football program has captured more titles than any other Division I football program in the nation. It should be no shock that this winning tradition was built on the work of several coaches and players and a legacy as deeply rooted and as strong as an old oak tree planted in Sweetheart Circle in the heart of the GSU campus. Although many believe that football began at the school in the 1980s, the history of this illustrious program actually stretches back to the early 1900s. A discussion of Georgia Southern’s football program recalls the names of coaches from the old football era such as Doc Quattlebaum, E.G. Cromartie, and H.A. Woodle. Reminiscing about the Eagles conjures up images of coaches Erk Russell, Tim Stowers, and Paul Johnson each accepting the national championship trophy and notable players such as Tracy Ham, Adrian Peterson, and Jayson Foster. But, aside from the trophies and cheering crowds, little is known about the struggles the football program faced or the constant fight to keep it alive and nurture it into what it is today—a program synonymous with championships and athletic excellence. This book chronicles the guts and glory that built the legendary football program at Georgia Southern University.
