The fabulous Pigeon Key. Who's been?

Most people see it from the Seven Mile Bridge for a few seconds and keep driving. But this tiny island once housed the workers who built Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad, and many of those original buildings are still standing.

You can walk or bike out on the Old Seven Mile Bridge, a little over two miles from Marathon, or take the ferry. Either way, it's one of the coolest stops in the Keys.

Afternoon stop at Sunset Grille in Marathon. Can there be a better view for lunch?

Peel and eat shrimp with butter and cocktail sauce, an ice cold Corona with lime, the pool right below, and the Seven Mile Bridge stretching out over turquoise water.

This is the kind of lunch that turns into a whole afternoon.

What's your favorite lunch stop on the drive from Miami to Key West?

113 miles, dozens of islands, and way too many good places to pull over and eat. Some people stop in Key Largo. Some wait for Islamorada. Some won't stop until they're looking at the Seven Mile Bridge in Marathon.

Peering over the blue wall at Gilbert's. Who's stopped?

Right as you come over the Jewfish Creek bridge into Key Largo, there it is down below. Tiki huts, palm trees, boats tied up at the docks, and turquoise water all around.

For a lot of people, it's the first stop in the Keys. For others, it's the last one on the way home.

Right before the road heads south into the Florida Keys, there's one last stop. The sign says it all: Last Chance for 24 miles. Since 1930.

Bar, liquor store, backyard grill, and a t-shirt to prove you made it. For a lot of us, this is where the trip really starts.

Top down, sun on your face, salt air, and nothing but turquoise water on both sides of the Seven Mile Bridge.

The expressway ends, the stress starts to fade, and the only thing left between you and the islands is the Overseas Highway.
