What Every Young Civil Engineer Must Know Before Searching for a Job
As we all know, “Who seeks equity must come with clean hands.”
In other words, before you expect results, you must first prepare yourself.
The same principle applies to young civil engineers looking for jobs.
If you are seeking employment and want to get it fast, there are certain things you must work on. You must get yourself ready.
1. You Must Have Strong Theoretical Knowledge
As a civil engineer, some questions should never confuse you.
If someone asks you:
• What is 1:2:4 or 1:3:6 mix?
• What is the composition of concrete?
• What is a Bar Bending Schedule (BBS)?
• What is a working schedule or construction methodology?
You must be able to answer confidently.
These are your basic theoretical foundations.
If you are truly a graduate, these things must not be foreign to you.
2. You Must Know How to Read and Interpret Drawings
This is compulsory. Learn to read and interpret:
• Architectural drawings
• Structural drawings
• Mechanical and electrical layouts
• Analytical and detailed drawings
A civil engineer who cannot interpret drawings cannot function effectively on site.
3. You Must Know How to Use Basic Tools
Practical knowledge of engineering instruments gives you confidence on site.
Familiarize yourself with:
• Theodolite and level instruments
• Laser level and plumb bob
• Calipers and other measuring tools
• Cube moulds, slump test apparatus, and other testing tools
These tools form part of your professional identity.
