Nebraska's Morrill Fire burned more land than any wildfire in state history — 643,000 acres across four counties in the western Sandhills.

We obtained county parcel records and mapped every landowner inside the burn zone.

256 unique landowners held title to the burned land. The top 10 control 52% of it. The two largest are the Rex Ranch and Ted Turner's Blue Creek Ranch, with ~180,000 and ~81,000 acres within the fire perimeter.

Yesterday morning's cloud cover was sparse enough for a satellite to capture this snapshot of the Morril Fire burn scar on the tri-county line north of Lake McConaughy. Take a closer look at it here: https://morrillfire.thesilonews.com/

It's been enhanced to show the scar more clearly in shades of red.

Latest numbers put the burn area at more than 700,000 acres; 18% contained.
