Deltona city leaders have reversed course on a controversial ordinance that banned anyone under 18 from riding e-bikes and e-scooters, just one week after the rule took effect.

Orange County Public Schools is pumping the brakes on e-bikes, electric scooters, hoverboards, and other motorized devices on school campuses.

Elementary and middle school students will no longer be allowed to bring them to school, while high school students will need a valid driver’s license or learner’s permit, plus a school-issued decal.

Families have until Tuesday, September 8, before enforcement begins.

Yesterday, August 1, 2026, another 14-year-old was seriously injured in an e-bike crash in Orange County, Central Florida. He suffered multiple broken bones and is currently hospitalized.

Accidents like this are exactly why e-bikes are coming under more scrutiny. If people continue breaking the law, riding recklessly, and creating problems, it’s only a matter of time before more cities and communities start banning or restricting e-bikes in certain areas.

That’s not fair to the riders who follow the rules. A handful of irresponsible people shouldn’t ruin this hobby for everyone else. If we want to keep enjoying our e-bikes, we all need to respect the law, ride safely, and set a good example.

The biggest threat to our hobby isn’t law enforcement—it’s the riders who refuse to follow the law and the people who continue defending them.

The truth isn’t always popular, but ignoring this problem won’t make it disappear. If we truly want to protect this hobby, we need to promote responsible riding instead of making excuses for illegal and reckless behavior.

Otherwise, we shouldn’t be surprised when new restrictions end up affecting every responsible rider—not just the few causing the problem.

749 crashes involving people walking and biking in Hillsborough County. Three bicyclists were killed. 318 injured. Eighteen pedestrians were killed. 409 injured.

These are not just numbers. They are our neighbors, family members, students, workers, and friends. Every crash changes a life. Every death leaves a family and community grieving.

We can do better. Local agencies need to make safety a higher priority and design streets that protect people—not just move vehicles.

At the Florida Bicycle Association, our advocacy and policy work are grounded in a commitment to data-driven decisions and evidence-based safety frameworks. Relying on clear crash data allows state, regional, and local decision-makers to implement the infrastructure changes and policies that most effectively protect people on bicycles.

Reversing support for evidence-based infrastructure undermines state, regional, and local planners working to build safe, low-stress transportation networks.

Creating a safer Florida requires prioritizing human lives and proven safety frameworks over motor vehicle throughput.

DISORDERLY STREET RIDES RETURN TO CENTRAL FLORIDA — NOW INCLUDING E-BIKES

Yesterday, the Orlando Police Department shared a video highlighting an ongoing issue in Downtown Orlando. Groups of motorcycles—and now e-bikes—have been gathering for large rides. The problem is not the ride itself; the problem is the repeated violations of the law.

In the video, you can clearly see riders running red lights, riding wherever they choose, blocking traffic, and creating a situation that is completely out of control.

The video also shows Orlando police officers making every effort to stop and arrest those who are acting irresponsibly. Once again, organized rides are not the issue. The issue is breaking the law and creating dangerous, disorderly situations.

Law enforcement agencies across Central Florida are not going to ignore this. They will continue working together to address these incidents. And when enforcement takes place, people should not immediately claim that the police are abusing their authority.

I have nothing against motorcycles or e-bikes. They are a great hobby, a form of transportation, and for many people, a true passion. But riding while violating traffic laws, putting others at risk, and intentionally blocking roads is irresponsible and unacceptable.

Ask yourself this: What if you were driving your child to the hospital during an emergency and a group of riders refused to let you pass simply because they didn’t want to? You wouldn’t want that to happen to you. So why do it to someone else?
