Runway Ready (Until I Wasn’t): A style-story with a sprinkle of realness!

Once upon a time, six-year-old me was convinced kindergarten morning would be my debut on the world’s smallest runway—because, Coco Chanel said, “Every day is a fashion show.” (She was onto something.) But reality had a plot twist: I ended up bawling—held by my dad—onto the school bus instead.

Turns out, failure and fashion share the same dance floor. What began as a dramatic back-slide became my first lesson in resilience. That bus-aisle breakdown taught me more than any outfit ever could: when “runway ready” plans fall apart, you regroup, recalibrate, and keep showing up.

So whether you’re stepping into a job interview or just surviving the Monday scramble: your outfit might spark confidence, but it’s your grit—that “right up until it all went sideways” spirit—that really steals the show.

Because style isn’t just what you wear—it’s how you rise when the spotlight goes dark.

Just around the corner from Covenant Health Park in downtown Knoxville is a space where rootsy Americana meets Southern grit & vintage style: Pioneer House of Letterpress & Vintage.

Julie Belcher — Appalachian artist, letterpress printmaker, and creative force — brings Knoxville’s culture to life with hand-pulled prints, encaustic art, and iconic posters that celebrate the South (“Whoa Mule,” “Sweet Tea,” and more).

Cowboy Phil (Phil Rupp) — with his signature long hair, warm smile, and unmatched knowledge of Western wear — curates a collection of vintage cowboy boots, hats, snap shirts, and even pieces once owned by legends like Ernest Tubb. Musicians and artists across the country seek him out to add one-of-a-kind treasures to their wardrobes.

Together, Julie and Phil have built a creative hub that’s part print shop, part art studio, and part vintage Western emporium—keeping Knoxville’s unique style alive.

The best finds? Always in person. Visit inside , or explore Julie’s art and goods at pioneer-house.com.

In Big Orange Country, tailgating is more than a pre-game party—it’s tradition, community, and plenty of good eating.

This month, West Knoxville Lifestyle Co-Publisher Amy Campbell takes us farm-to-football with the ultimate tailgate brunch cure: the Benton family’s legendary Country Ham Biscuits.

For generations, Allan and Sharon Benton of have perfected the art of smoking hams and baking biscuits. The result? A warm, foil-wrapped bite of Tennessee comfort that wins every time—whether you’re tenting on campus, joining the Vol Navy, or setting up near Neyland.

Because when it comes to tailgating, a country ham biscuit isn’t just food—it’s tradition.

We are so honored to share a monthly article written by our partners at PYA Waltman Capital. Their thoughtful work in our community helps to make sure their clients’
financial future is on firm footing.

From chicken coops to financial planning, Eric Foster, CFP®, CPA, draws a clever connection between building a home for his family’s hens and building a strong
investment strategy. Just like the unpredictable nature of chickens and their coop door, investing can be tricky without following a few key rules: avoid unnecessary risks, have a plan, and don’t panic over short-term changes.
