At the Beck Cultural Exchange Center, Rev. Reneé Kesler is leading the effort to transform the only remaining ancestral home of Beauford and Joseph Delaney into one of the nation’s few African American house museums, the Delaney Museum at Beck. Her work honors their artistic legacy and helps ensure this piece of Knoxville’s cultural history is protected for generations to come.

For veteran broadcaster Bill Conner, service didn’t end when the uniform came off.

After years behind the mic with Armed Forces Radio and Television, Bill found his “third act” serving those who serve—helping airmen and their families at McGhee Tyson Air National Guard Base.

This Veterans Day, we honor those like Bill who continue to give back long after duty calls.

In Knoxville’s National Cemetery, stories of courage rest in quiet symmetry. Each marker represents a life lived in service, a chapter in the larger story of who we are as a community.

As Veterans Day approaches, we pause to reflect on those who gave their strength, their time, and their lives to something greater than themselves. Their legacy reminds us that freedom, gratitude, and peace are never taken for granted.

“Being a restaurateur is one of the hardest careers… it lives in your head and never really lets you clock out,” says Demi Klonaris, President of Spaces in the City — and someone who knows firsthand what it means to grow up in the heartbeat of Knoxville’s hospitality world.

The son of Jim & Lori Klonaris, the visionary force behind , , , and now the multi-venue empire that is , Demi’s journey began bussing tables, learning from the best. Today, he leads a team of 300+ across all businesses.

“Event space management started as a side stream,” Demi shares. “Now, it drives our growth.” With over 2,200 catered events this year, Knoxville’s largest catering company is reshaping how the city celebrates—from nonprofit galas to weddings, corporate parties to intimate gatherings.

Demi credits his parents, his faith, and his wife Maria for the growth—and says his purpose is simple: “To honor my parents and help shape the next generation of hospitality in this city I love.”

John Coykendall, Master Gardener at and legendary seed saver, swears by one variety: the Kentucky Field Pumpkin—not the watery, bland jack-o’-lantern types you find at the store.

Grown for generations and sketched in John’s famed composition notebooks, this pear-shaped, thick-fleshed pumpkin offers a rich, sweet, nutty flavor that will have guests raving well into next Thanksgiving.

Fun fact: The seed stock John uses came from Miller’s Cove in Blount County—a true heirloom treasure with Tennessee roots.

Find Kentucky Field Pumpkins at local fruit stands this fall. Roast, purée, and freeze to bring a taste of tradition to your holiday table. Because when the pie is the finale, it deserves a standing ovation.

John is also a frequent contributor to so make sure to follow to catch him!
