DID YOU KNOW?
EVERYTHING - Every. Single. Thing. - related to your care (and if you are pregnant, your baby's [ies'] care) is OPTIONAL. Whether it is presented that way or not.
Yep, you read that right! I have made it a point to tell EVERY patient I encounter this sentence. I have had so many say in response, "wow, I didn't know that." And you know what? That is honestly sad.
It is my job to recommend things. It is my job to educate. I will always do that based on the information I have and promote evidence-based practices. I am a believer in science and research. I value the professional statements that guide me on how to care for patients. That's how I operate as a CNM. I promise that most every medical professional truly wants good outcomes, and that may be why things seem "pushy." We've seen some bad things, and we don't want you or your baby to be a negative statistic. TRULY we don't.
BUT, I also want to be a team. I want you to be on board with the plan that affects YOU (and if pregnant, your baby[ies]. I want to meet you where you are. I want you to feel heard. I want you to feel empowered. I want you to be educated and understand what is happening and why, how it can affect you and babe, and why the recommendation is what it is. I want you to have the knowledge to make the decision that YOU feel comfortable with in the end.
**ALSO IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: A medical practice also has a choice whether to keep someone as a patient or not if someone is going against medical advice/recommendation. This is why kind, effective communication is so crucial for both parties involved!**
