Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt has revealed that he turned down Ozzy Osbourne when he was asked to join his band in 1995—and shares last words he said to him.

Nuno was being interviewed on the red carpet at the VMAs, where he was scheduled to perform a tribute to Ozzy alongside Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Yungblud.

He says that turning down the gig with the metal icon was “probably” his biggest musical regret, and shared what his last words were to the heavy metal legend:

“Thank you for everything, and thank you Ozzy, for what you mean to me.” Ozzy replied, “You were the only guitar player who said no to me… I love you.”

Nuno played a huge part in Ozzy’s last show—which took place at Villa Park, Birmingham, on July 5, 2025. The Black Sabbath frontman passed away not long after, on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76.
