📖 “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” (Romans 15:4 ESV)

Our hope is not something we have to manufacture within ourselves.

This verse reminds us that God has graciously given us His written Word for our instruction. Through the Scriptures, He points us again and again to His faithfulness, His promises, and ultimately to Jesus Christ.

This is a beautiful reminder that the God who saves His people also sustains His people.

When our strength fails, God does not leave us to preserve ourselves. He works through the means He has appointed, including His Word, to strengthen our faith, encourage our hearts, and produce endurance.

The Scriptures show us generations of God’s people walking through suffering, weakness, uncertainty, and trials. Yet behind every story stands the same faithful God whose purposes never fail.

Our perseverance rests ultimately not in the strength of our grip on Christ, but in Christ’s grip on us.

That is why the believer can have hope.

Not because life will always be easy. Not because our faith will always feel strong. But because the God who called us is faithful.

His Word remains true. His promises still stand. And He will preserve His people to the end.

📖 “Your people will offer themselves freely on the day of your power, in holy garments; from the womb of the morning, the dew of your youth will be yours.” (Psalm 110:3 ESV)

Psalm 110 points us to the victorious reign of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. And this verse gives us a beautiful picture of what happens when His power is at work: His people come willingly.

Notice the order.

It is “on the day of your power” that His people offer themselves freely.

God’s sovereign grace does not leave the sinner’s heart unchanged. By nature, we do not seek God or possess the power to make ourselves spiritually alive. But when God works by His Spirit, He gives life to the spiritually dead, opens blind eyes, and changes the desires of the heart.

He makes an unwilling heart willing.

This does not mean that God forces people to love Christ against their desires. It means something far more wonderful: He changes our desires. By His grace, the Christ we once did not seek becomes the Savior we freely and gladly desire.

Our coming to Christ is real. Our faith is real. Our love for Him is real. Yet underneath it all is the sovereign grace of God that first made us alive and gave us a heart willing to come.

Salvation leaves no room for boasting in ourselves. From beginning to end, the glory belongs to God.

📖 “But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth. To this he called you through our gospel, so that you may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2 Thessalonians 2:13–14 ESV)

Have you ever stopped to consider that your salvation began with God, not with you?

In this passage, the apostle Paul reminds believers that God chose them for salvation, sanctifies them through His Spirit, and calls them through the gospel so that they may obtain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

This reveals a beautiful truth about God's sovereign grace: We did not initiate our salvation. God did.

Before we ever sought Him, God had already purposed to save His people. Because of our sinful nature, we could never change our own hearts or bring ourselves from spiritual death to life. But in His great mercy, God calls His people through the gospel, and the Holy Spirit opens their hearts to believe the truth.

Our salvation is not the result of our own goodness, effort, or ability. It is entirely dependent upon God's grace and the finished work of Jesus Christ.

And the same God who chose us, called us, and gave us new life will faithfully complete the work He began.

What an incredible reason to give thanks!

We love Him because He first loved us. We believe because He graciously opened our hearts. And we persevere because He faithfully holds us.

📖 “We love because he first loved us.” (1 John 4:19 ESV)

📖 “ But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ, by grace you have been saved (Ephesians 2:4–5 ESV)

These verses remind us of a beautiful truth: Our salvation begins with God's love, not our ability to love Him.

Before we ever sought the Lord, we were spiritually dead in our sins. We could not save ourselves, earn God's favor, or make our hearts spiritually alive.

Yet God, being rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in our trespasses.

This is the miracle of sovereign grace. God does not simply offer spiritual life and wait for spiritually dead sinners to produce it themselves. Through the Holy Spirit, He graciously gives us new life in Christ, opens our hearts to believe, and draws us to Himself.

Our love for Jesus is not the cause of our salvation. It is the result of His saving love for us.

We love Him because He first loved us. We believe because He has graciously brought us to life. And from beginning to end, all the glory belongs to God.

📖 “Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will bring you into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD; I have spoken, and I will do it, declares the LORD.” (Ezekiel 37:12–14 ESV)

In Ezekiel 37, God speaks to His people, Israel, who were living in exile and seemingly without hope. Through the powerful imagery of opening graves and raising the dead, God promises to restore His people, put His Spirit within them, and bring them back to their land.

What an extraordinary picture of God's sovereign power!

The Lord does not tell His people to raise themselves from their graves. He declares that He Himself will raise them, give them His Spirit, and restore them according to His promise.

What God promises, He has the power to accomplish!

This passage also provides a beautiful picture of the sovereign grace we see more fully revealed in the New Testament.

Apart from Christ, we are spiritually dead in our trespasses and sins. We cannot regenerate our own hearts or produce spiritual life through our own efforts. Just as the dead cannot raise themselves, sinners depend entirely upon God's life-giving grace.

But God, being rich in mercy, makes us alive together with Christ! (Ephesians 2:4–5)

Through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit, God opens our hearts, gives us new life, and draws us to Jesus Christ. Our salvation begins not with our own strength or merit, but with God's sovereign mercy.

And just as God promised to put His Spirit within His people, every believer in Christ has the Holy Spirit dwelling within them.

We were spiritually dead, but God made us alive in Christ. Our salvation is His work, and all the glory belongs to Him!

Ezekiel's prophecy originally concerns God's promised restoration of Israel. Its imagery of resurrection and the gift of the Spirit also reminds us of the life-giving power of God revealed in the gospel.

📖 “And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.” (Colossians 2:13–14 ESV)

Apart from Christ, we were spiritually dead in our trespasses and sins. We could not change our own hearts, remove our guilt, or make ourselves right with God. We needed more than guidance or a second chance. We needed to be made alive by God's sovereign grace.

But God, in His sovereign mercy, made us alive together with Christ!

This passage reveals the power of God's sovereign grace. Salvation does not begin with our ability to seek God or make ourselves spiritually alive. It begins with God, who graciously gives life to those who were dead in sin.

And what about the debt of our sins?

Jesus Christ accomplished what we could never accomplish. Through His finished work on the cross, the record of debt that stood against us was canceled. In Christ, our sins are forgiven, and we are reconciled to God.

Our salvation is not something we earn. It is a gift of grace, secured by Jesus Christ.

We were dead. God made us alive. Christ paid our debt. To God be all the glory!

📖 “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:3–5 ESV)

Our salvation does not begin with our ability to make ourselves new. Peter says that according to God’s great mercy, He “has caused us to be born again” to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

That is grace.

We were spiritually dead and unable to give ourselves new life. God took the initiative. He showed mercy, gave life, and brought us to a living hope in Christ.

But His work doesn’t stop there.

Peter tells believers that we have an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for us. And while that inheritance is being kept for us, we are being kept too, guarded by the power of God through faith until our salvation is fully revealed.

The God who saves His people is the God who preserves His people.

Our confidence is not ultimately in how tightly we can hold onto Christ, but in the power and faithfulness of Christ to hold onto us.

When your faith feels weak, remember: your salvation rests in hands far stronger than your own.

📖 “Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.’” (John 8:12 ESV)

Apart from Christ, we aren’t simply people who need a little more direction. Scripture describes us as spiritually blind and unable to bring ourselves out of the darkness of sin.

That’s what makes the grace of God so beautiful.

We don’t create the light.
We don’t find our own way out.
Jesus is the Light.

In His grace, God opens blind eyes, gives life to dead hearts, and draws sinners to Christ. When He brings us into the light, we begin to see Jesus for who He truly is and we follow Him.

And the One who calls us out of darkness does not abandon us there. Christ continues to lead His people. Our confidence is not ultimately in how tightly we can hold onto Him, but in the grace of the Savior who first took hold of us.

If you’re trusting in Christ today, your hope isn’t that you somehow found the Light on your own.

The Light came to you.

📖 “Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,” (Ephesians 3:20 ESV)

God’s power is not dependent on our strength.

In Ephesians 3, Paul points us to a God who is able to accomplish far beyond what we could ask or even imagine and He does it according to His power at work within us.

We were spiritually dead and unable to make ourselves alive, but God acted. He made us alive with Christ, opened our hearts, and brought us to faith by His grace. And the God who begins His work in His people does not leave us to finish it in our own strength.

The same God who saves is at work sanctifying, strengthening, and sustaining His people.

This verse isn’t a promise that God will give us every earthly dream we can imagine. In context, Paul has been praying that believers would be strengthened by the Spirit, rooted in Christ’s love, and filled with the fullness of God.

Our confidence, then, isn’t in how much we can accomplish for God.

It is in what God is able to accomplish in us by His power and for His glory.
