UPDATE: A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck Southern Mindanao at around 7:37 a.m. on Monday, affecting several areas including General Santos City, Sarangani, and parts of the Davao Region.
Reports say several buildings and establishments sustained damage, leading to temporary closures in some areas. A widespread power outage was also reported in General Santos City as authorities continue conducting damage assessments.
The strong quake happened on the first day of classes in many schools across the region. In Matanao, Davao del Sur, a school building reportedly collapsed due to the intense shaking.
Meanwhile, PHIVOLCS issued a tsunami alert for several coastal areas in Mindanao, including Sarangani, Davao Occidental, Tawi-Tawi, Sulu, Basilan, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay, Sultan Kudarat, and South Cotabato. Residents living near coastal communities are strongly advised to move to safer areas and follow the instructions of local authorities immediately.
Authorities are also reminding the public to stay alert as aftershocks may continue in the coming hours.
