Collegiate Tailgate Party Photo Opportunity At 12 Noon

Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee college football fans are invited to meet across from the Summerville Depot at the World Friendship Pocket Park wearing your favorite team colors or jerseys for a promotional photo opportunity representing each team, for the unveiling of the new Tailgate Friendship Flag. Separate team photos will be taken, as well as a group photo, to be sent to Frankfurt Germany for the Frankfurt Bookfair that welcomes over 200,000 attendees annually. The Tailgate flags, along with Oak seedlings will be presented to the City of Chattanooga, the City of Birmingham and the City of Atlanta to represent friendship, peace and global unity on behalf of Summerville and the World Friendship Flag to these areas.

Train Arrival

A special attraction for the day will be the arrival of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum Steam Engine filled with passengers. Summerville is home to one of only a few operating train turntables in the southeastern United States, and is truly a step back in time for train and history buffs alike. The Summerville Turntable turns the majestic steam engines at each train arrival and is the subject for many train photographers.

This September train arrival will open the door to lead into “Steam into Summerville Railroad Days”. Steam Into Summerville Railroad Days is a 6-week celebration to usher in fall, along with train arrivals, and visitors each weekend beginning October 4th through November 8th. Each weekend will feature a unique themed event or festival complete with vendors, craftsman and music.

Booking Train Excursions

Tickets for train excursions are purchased through the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum at www.tvrail.com . These vintage train rides follow a historic route from Grand Junction Station in Chattanooga to the Historic Summerville Depot. Summerville welcomes the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum and its passengers by opening the historic depot to the public and with activities, entertainment, and events planned for each train arrival. Each event hosted is unique to itself.

Emory will be tuition-free for students whose families earn $200,000 or less

Students whose families earn $200,000 or less will attend Emory University tuition-free starting in fall 2026. Students whose families earn $200,000 or less will attend Emory University tuition-free starting in fall 2026.

This transformative scholarship, Emory Advantage Plus, represents a significant expansion of the university’s financial aid program and continues Emory’s longstanding commitment to support talented students by making a preeminent education more attainable.

All new and returning domestic undergraduate students who meet the income requirements and are eligible for need-based aid will be considered for Emory Advantage Plus next fall. Emory will also continue to meet 100% of demonstrated need for all domestic undergraduate students.

“Offering free tuition to every student whose family income is $200,000 or less is about leadership,” says Interim President Leah Ward Sears. “We want great students to come here without regard to the cost. And we will do everything in our power to give them a great education without the burden of crushing debt.

“When students sit at the kitchen table with their parents to discuss college, I don’t want finances to be a consideration,” Sears explains. “If they qualify to come to Emory and they want to come to Emory, we will make sure they can afford Emory.”

Throughout the month of October, the AdventHealth cancer care teams are challenging our community once again to light porches pink across Northwest Georgia to spread awareness of breast cancer.

The “Light Your Porch Pink” movement shines a light on breast cancer, which affects one in eight women and is easily treatable when caught early. Community members are invited to participate in this experience by installing a pink light bulb in their front porch light socket, creating a pink evening glow.

Mammograms truly save lives, so we’re also encouraging women to schedule their annual mammogram at one of our AdventHealth locations in Rome, Calhoun or Chatsworth. With 3D mammograms in 30 minutes, we’re making it easy to get screened.

Thousands of pink light bulbs will be distributed across Floyd, Gordon and Murray counties starting September 15, 2025. Light bulbs are available for pick-up at the following locations while supplies last:

AdventHealth Gordon: East Entrance Lobby
1035 Red Bud Road, Calhoun, GA 30701

AdventHealth Gordon: North Entrance Lobby
1035 Red Bud Road, Calhoun, GA 30701

AdventHealth Gordon: Edna Owens Breast Center

AdventHealth Murray: Main Entrance Lobby

AdventHealth Redmond: Women's Center

AdventHealth Redmond: Outpatient Entrance

AdventHealth Medical Group: Family and Occupational Medicine at Shorter Avenue

160 Central Avenue, Trion, GA 30753

AdventHealth Medical Group: Family and Internal Medicine at Cedartown
1168 North Main Street Suite 110, Cedartown, GA 30125

When lighting your porch pink, be sure to take photos and share them on social media with the hashtag, along with your reasons for shining a light on breast cancer. Whether it's a message of remembrance, a celebration of survivorship, or a reflection on your own journey
