A Hard Row to Hoe - A Documentary on Brother Dege
To celebrate Dege’s Birthday on June 8, we will be publicly debuting this wonderful documentary by Lucas Fiederling of Peregrine Films.
The documentary will drop at midnight on June 8th on the official Brother Dege website and official Brother Dege YouTube channel.
Come to Brother Dege’s Beach Birthday Bash tonight at the Blue Moon Saloon to see it early. We’ll have a TV playing it as well as the wonderful documentary Olivia Perillo compiled for the ACA tribute show two years ago. Doors open at 7pm. Music starts at 8pm.

“A Hard Row to Hoe” is a compelling 55-minute documentary directed by Lucas Fiederling that explores the life and artistry of Dege Legg, better known as Brother Dege, a delta blues musician often hailed as “Louisiana’s best kept secret.”
Dege’s music, including the acclaimed track “Too Old to Die Young,” which was featured in Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” brought him fleeting recognition, but commercial success remained elusive.
Despite these challenges, Dege tirelessly pursued his passion, running his own label, booking tours, and taking on countless day jobs to support his dreams.
In early 2024, just days before the release of his final album, Dege tragically ended his own life, a devastating event that cast a new light on his lifelong struggle.
The documentary, now extended to 55 minutes with 23 additional minutes of footage, offers an intimate look at Dege’s journey, from the swamps of Louisiana to the international stage, capturing the raw emotion and depth of his delta blues. It portrays a man who lived for his music, grappling with the realities of an unforgiving industry while staying true to his roots.
The film also touches on the personal toll of Dege’s commitment to his craft, highlighting the emotional and financial challenges he faced. As the documentary unfolds, it becomes not just a tribute to Dege’s talent, but a reflection on the cost of chasing a dream in a world that often overlooks the most genuine voices.
