🫘 HOW TO KEEP YOUR KIDNEYS HEALTHY & FUNCTIONING WELL
Your kidneys work quietly every day—but they are doing a BIG job.
Each kidney helps filter waste and excess fluid from your blood, regulate blood pressure, balance important minerals, and support the production of red blood cells.
The problem? Kidney disease can develop silently. You may feel perfectly fine while kidney function is gradually declining.
The good news is that many kidney problems can be prevented or their progression slowed by taking care of your health.
Here are some simple ways to protect your kidneys 👇🏽
💧 1. STAY PROPERLY HYDRATED
Drink enough fluids throughout the day, especially when the weather is hot or when you're physically active.
Adequate hydration helps your kidneys eliminate waste through urine.
However, more water is not always better. People with certain kidney or heart conditions may need to limit their fluid intake, so follow your healthcare professional's advice if this applies to you.
🧂 2. CUT DOWN ON SALT
Too much sodium can contribute to high blood pressure, and uncontrolled high blood pressure can damage the kidneys over time.
Reduce:
Very salty foods
Processed meats
Instant noodles
Packaged snacks
Excess seasoning cubes and salty sauces
Instead, use natural herbs and spices to add flavour to your meals.
🩸 3. KEEP YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE UNDER CONTROL
High blood pressure is one of the major causes of kidney damage.
Don't wait until you feel symptoms—check your blood pressure regularly.
If you have hypertension, take your prescribed medication consistently and attend your follow-up appointments.
🍬 4. CONTROL YOUR BLOOD SUGAR
Diabetes can damage the small blood vessels that help the kidneys filter your blood.
If you have diabetes or are at risk, monitor your blood glucose, take your treatment as prescribed, eat a balanced diet, and stay physically active.
🥗 5. EAT FOR YOUR KIDNEYS
Your kidneys benefit from an overall healthy eating pattern.
Aim for more: 🥬 Vegetables
🍎 Fruits
🌾 Whole grains
🫘 Beans and other healthy protein sources
🐟 Fish and other nutritious foods
Limit excessive processed foods, added sugars, salt, and unhealthy fats.
🏃🏽♀️ 6. KEEP YOUR BODY ACTIVE
Regular physical activity helps you maintain a healthy weight and lowers your risk of hypertension and diabetes—two important risk factors for kidney disease.
You don't necessarily need a gym.
Walking, dancing, cycling, household activities and other forms of regular movement all count.
💊 7. BE CAREFUL WITH PAINKILLERS
Some commonly used pain medicines, particularly NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and diclofenac, can harm the kidneys when used excessively or in certain people.
Don't make a habit of taking painkillers frequently without medical advice.
Always tell your healthcare provider about medicines and supplements you are taking.
🚭 8. DON'T SMOKE
Smoking damages blood vessels and can contribute to poor blood flow to the kidneys.
Quitting smoking is one more way to protect your kidneys—and your overall health.
🍺 9. LIMIT EXCESSIVE ALCOHOL
Heavy alcohol use can contribute to high blood pressure, dehydration and other conditions that can indirectly affect kidney health.
Moderation and avoiding excessive drinking are important.
⚖️ 10. MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT
Being overweight or obese increases the risk of conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, which can eventually affect kidney function.
Focus on sustainable habits rather than extreme diets or rapid weight-loss methods.
🩺 11. DON'T WAIT FOR SYMPTOMS
This is one of the most important points.
Kidney disease can be silent in its early stages.
If you have diabetes, hypertension, a family history of kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, or other risk factors, talk to a healthcare professional about kidney screening.
Simple tests such as blood creatinine/eGFR and urine tests for albumin can help assess kidney health.
🚨 PAY ATTENTION TO WARNING SIGNS
Seek medical attention if you notice persistent:
Swelling of the feet, ankles, face or around the eyes
Blood in the urine
Foamy urine
Significant changes in urination
Persistent fatigue
Unexplained nausea
Persistent itching
Shortness of breath, especially with swelling
These symptoms can have many causes, but they should not be ignored.
❤️ REMEMBER:
Protecting your kidneys is not about one magic food, detox drink or herbal remedy.
It is about the everyday choices you make:
💧 Stay appropriately hydrated
🧂 Reduce excess salt
🩸 Control your blood pressure
🍬 Control your blood sugar
🥗 Eat a balanced diet
🏃🏽♀️ Stay physically active
💊 Use medicines responsibly
🚭 Avoid smoking
⚖️ Maintain a healthy weight
🩺 Get checked when you're at risk
Your kidneys may not complain loudly when they are struggling.
Take care of them before they become a problem. 🫘❤️
