Check out this incredible view inside the Norway pavilion at Epcot, captured during construction of the Maelstrom attraction in the summer of 1987.

At this point in construction, two distinct levels are taking shape, highlighting the ambitious and layered design of the attraction, which officially opened to guests on July 5, 1988.

Space Mountain was also the first thrill ride ever to use computerized mechanisms to ensure the safety of its passengers 🚀

Sadly, I’ve just been informed of the passing of former Walt Disney Imagineer John Mayberry, who was a good friend of our community here at WDW Connection, and kindly offered his insights from his experiences at WED from 1980-1984.

During his time at Imagineering, John was instrumental in designing and installing audio and acoustic systems, particularly during the construction of Horizons and other pavilions at Epcot Center. It’s widely recognized that Epcot Center had some of the most exceptional music at Disney parks, and John played a pivotal role in creating that iconic atmosphere that we all cherished at our favorite attractions.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.

It must have been fun to build a Magic Kingdom! At this stage of construction, preparations are underway for the future site of the Rivers of America. In the background, we can catch a glimpse of Tom Sawyer Island and Haunted Mansion.
