Sir Paul McCartney plays the first of two nights in Chicago at the United Center, so in honor of that I have McCartney for you today and tomorrow!
Thought I'd go with "Silly Love Songs," inspired by critics - including John Lennon - that Paul was going too soft with his music and writing silly love songs. And Paul apparently thought "what's wrong with that?" So of course, he turned it into a song with his band Wings.
First appearing in March 1976 on the album Wings at the Speed of Sound, "Silly Love Songs" went to #1, becoming McCartney's 27th US number one as a songwriter, giving him the all-time record. The song also went #1 in Canada and Ireland. With a bit of a disco and funk beat but still somewhat gentle, "Silly Love Songs" had its own groove and a good bassline.
McCartney also invited the horn section to create their own parts for the song, giving it one of its most distinct features that have been sampled on several club hits since.
Doubtful it'll be on the setlist tonight, but I have "Silly Love Songs" on Lake961 for you just after 8am! โ Eric Paulsen
