The skies should be clear again tonight and Saturday night! Perfect for Comet Neowise and stargazing. To find the comet look to the Northwest at about 18 degrees up from the horizon any time after 9:30 PM EST. As the sky darkens it will become more obvious. The Moon is out of the picture right now so the skies will be quite dark. Follow the Big Dipper's bisecting line down to find it if you are having trouble.

DEC Closes Prospect Mountain Trail Due to Construction Activity on the Summit
Prospect Mountain Trail is now closed due to construction on the summit. The summit area, above the parking lot, has been closed to the public, and signs at the trail told hikers the summit area was not open. However, many hikers entered the construction zone, so DEC has closed the trail. The summit of the mountain and the trail will remain closed until late August while 500 feet of mortared stone border wall that is crumbling along summit lookout areas is removed and replaced with individual cut stone blocks. Due to the grades, the moving of the stone blocks is difficult and dangerous, especially with heavy equipment. The road and the path from the parking lot are blocked.

Have you spotted Comet Neowise in the Northern sky?

Comet Neowise over Lake George.
Lake George, NY

My father was an avid astronomer when I grew up and those nights under the stars still guide me today. Whenever I see something really amazing in the night sky I think of him today. With the recent discovery of Comet Neowise (C/2020 F3) I was hoping to be able to record it as it passed over my home. Storms are coming in this weekend and its brightness may start to fade over the coming days, so 2:15 AM it was. I managed to find a scene overlooking Lake George that would incorporate the comet nicely and crossed my fingers that it would arrive before the clouds. Around 3:45 AM it all started to come together. Such a beautiful sight, it was like seeing a friend again after being apart for a really long time!

Safe journey, Neowise, thanks for reminding us of our place in all of this.

All the best to you and good health to you, your family and friends.

There has been a lot of discussion about people seeing dead fish in Lake George in the last week -- a disturbing view, for sure, in our Class AA-Special Lake.

Our Director of Education, Kristen Wilde, said this: "The fish die off is lakewide and something we see every year to some extent. Some years it is worse than others."

"It is likely the result of low concentrations of dissolved oxygen in the water due to a fast warming of Lake George. The lake warmed about 10 degrees within three days."

"Also, the lack of rain has not allowed for water circulation which would also play a factor in the depleted oxygen."

"Many have mentioned seeing dead perch and sunfish, among other species. They are the warm-water fish, in the top 'story' of the Lake's two story fishery, living in the upper levels of the Lake that experienced the fast temperature increase."

"The deep coldwater fish are not being seen in the die off since cold water holds more oxygen than warm water."

Please let us know what you are seeing in the Lake in your particular area.

Rock the Dock Music Festival

Rock the Dock Music Festival

Unfortunately we are going to have to postpone this year's festival.
But we do have a date next year! Rock the Dock will be held on JULY 23, 2021.

We did not make any announcements until now because we were hopeful that the summer months would mitigate this virus, we would be able to return to normal and have a desperately needed good time with some good vibes. But with the current resurgent state of the virus and its rapid spread throughout the country, it would be foolish for us to hold a music festival right now.

If you have purchased a ticket just call call (518)668-5777 extension 4 and we can send you a new updated ticket when the next year's festival comes around! But if you would like a refund then please call that same number and we can refund your ticket!

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding with us this year. So far, 2020 has been extremely difficult, but if we just keep the faith, keep on holding strong and being mindful of social distancing, we will all get through this together and have a rocking time in 2021!!

Village of Lake George

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Mayor Blais has directed the closure of the Village’s Lake Avenue Park launch site effective Thursday, July 9th due to COVID-19 regulations and numerous complaints concerning misuse of the area.

Village officials closed the 30-ft waterfront area approximately ten years ago and transformed the area into a passive park and launch site for kayaks and canoes. Previously it was a public beach but DOH regulations made it economically impractical to continue.

This year’s complaints have surfaced concerning misuse of the area, public intoxication, noise, rubbish and vandalism. COVID-19 regulations also call for half-capacity, social distancing and wearing masks.

“It has become impossible to enforce and regulate a beach that size,” according to the Mayor. “Motels in the area will have to send their guests to Shepard Park.”

Village officials will evaluate a re-opening at a later date. Village landscapers will be also be cleaning, weeding and refurbishing the area while it is closed to the public.

What’s going on in Lake George?

The seeds of Lake George Examiner were planted in 1954 when the most senior member of our crew drove up Lockhart Mountain Road to explore employment opportunities at the historic Top O’ The World Resort. That fortuitous trip up the mountain in a 1950s-era Pontiac sedan was the start of a relationship with Lake George that continues today. The next generation followed in his path, venturing down French Mountain to explore the exuberant Village of Lake George.

On January 1, 2012, The Lake George Examiner took to the internet, first as part of a national news network, then, with a July 2016 re-launch, as an independent website. The Lake George Examiner continues today chronicling events and activities in the Lake George Region.
