Providing Low-Income, Uninsured Residents of Polk County with Access to FREE Specialty Healthcare, Diagnostics, and Labs

Providing Low-Income, Uninsured Residents of Polk County with Access to FREE Specialty Healthcare, Diagnostics, and Labs. Our patients are people you see every day in our community – like the young cashier handing you your order at a busy ice cream shop, and the older gentleman counting your shirts at your neighborhood dry cleaner. Others work behind the scenes – like the dishwasher in a popular restaurant and the evening security guard at a local office building....

SEU Rally Comes Up Just Short

SEU saw its undefeated start come to an end Sunday afternoon, as the Fire dropped a tight 66-64 decision to Shawnee State in a neutral-site contest at Babson Park. It is absolutely heartbreaking to see what is happening inside Polk County Animal Control

By Maria Consuelo Barrero It is absolutely heartbreaking to see what is happening inside Polk County Animal Control every single day. Severe overcrowding, lack of resources, and preventable deaths continue, while animals suffer needlessly. This crisis is made even worse by the absence of meaningful volunteer programs, foster programs, public education initiatives, and a countywide TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return) program, which is proven to be the most effective and humane way to control community cat populations and reduce shelter intake....

SNAP benefits are flowing again but many enrollees will soon hit another hurdle

Food stamp recipients are now receiving their November benefits, but a growing swath of enrollees may soon lose their vital food assistance completely. At the same time as the government shutdown disrupted the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, states began implementing an expansion of the program’s work requirements as mandated in the Republicans’ “big, beautiful bill,” which was signed into law by President Donald Trump this summer....

Polk County is Building an “Air Taxi” Hub!

Polk County is about to become a major testing ground for the future of transportation—flying electric cars, or what the state calls "Air Taxis." The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) presented plans to county leaders to turn the SunTrax facility (that big highway testing track in Auburndale) into the state's main location for developing this technology. What is Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)?...

Stop the Killing at Polk County Animal Services

By USA PAW Healthy and treatable pets should never be dying in our shelters. Ending a life that could be saved is not “standard procedure.” It is not “necessary.” It is a failure of policy, leadership, and will- and communities have every right to demand better. Across the country, shelters that embrace proven, humane programs are saving 98–99% of their animals....

Letter – Grateful for the Effort — But Florida’s Puppy Mill Proposal Must Be Revised to Protect ALL Animals, Including CATS

By Maria Consuelo Barrero We are truly grateful to the members of the Florida Legislature for acknowledging the need to address cruelty and irresponsible breeding in our state. Any step toward reform matters, and we sincerely appreciate the work that has been started. However, with respect and urgency, we must also speak up: the current proposal contains major loopholes and does not go far enough — especially for counties like Polk County, where we are facing a full-scale animal control crisis....
