"Comma, comma, down…Breaking up is hard to do…" Neil Diamond says it all! reflecting how we writers too often find it hard to break up a long, long, long sentence, but now writers are invited to retain the long sentence and turn it into a story (from 100 to 2000 words) for a book that will be published this spring, and the deadline is close — January 30, 2017 — so if you want to be included in the book, send your story to [email protected] and don't put it off any longer because you don't want to miss this opportunity to be published, and that's as long a sentence as I feel like writing at this time, however…

Every writer hits a wall during the writing of a novel. So what do you do? Wail, pace, pound on something? No! You sit back down, pick up your cursor (pen, pencil, crayon…) and begin to write… anything… maybe a phrase that's been going through your head… maybe a name… and you keep writing, unmindful of punctuation or spelling until you realize you've just written a very long sentence that tells a story. Choose a title and send it to Muddy Puddle Press ([email protected]) to be included in an anthology of 1-sentence stories to be published in the spring. For details (deadlines and such), go to www.valdumond.com. And then, and then… you go back to your novel, refreshed, excited, and ready to get back to it!

The gauntlet has been dropped — the challenge given — to my writer friends to create a one-sentence story, an achievement that takes know-how with words and understanding of sentence structure, two elements important to this challenge, which I have turned into a kind of hobby, utilizing my wait time on the phone as well as my wait time in the offices of strange people, a hobby that restores my soul, lightens my heart, and energizes my brain, and a hobby you are invited to partake by writing your own one-sentence story and submitting it to Muddy Puddle Press for inclusion in the anthology to be published next Spring (submission guidelines available upon request), and also as part of the celebration of NaNoWriMo (National November Writing Month), an annual event to encourage writers to call up their muses and deliver a novel (or anthology) in 30 days, and one I invite you to try — just for fun, if not for the challenge of writing a long sentence like this one, which could go on for ages if…

UPDATE: AMERICAN-ENGLISH is roaring around the world. Apparently, writers in other countries want to "sound" like Americans. This Official Guide to AMERICAN-ENGLISH is the best way to do that. Now available on Amazon — two stories as current as the headlines on your search engines — growing up black in a white world filled with bad-apple cops, tons of anger, and no justice!

Muddy Puddle Press is readying two books about the flack going on in this country about the treatment (and mis-treatment) of black boys and men. One is a novel, a love story and mystery all in one, and the other is a re-print of an earlier novel about Ghetto Angels. Sometimes fictionalized history is easier to understand than straight, angry facts. Stay tuned!
