Lamar City Park
Over 100 years old and still Fabulous!
Lamar, Missouri is home to a beautiful, scenic City Park filled with lush green grass, a winding water way, a quaint covered bridge, walking trail and recreational areas for “All kinds of activities”. I sure hope at least one person gets the reference from a clever and fun film that debuted in the summer of 2008. Any who, back to the gloriousness that is the Lamar City Park.
One can’t help but wonder how many people that utilize the park truly appreciate the level of care and dedication put into maintaining such an integral part of Lamar. The grass is always well kept, the grounds are free from trash and debris and improvements are always being made, like the addition of the restroom facility by the playground. This incorporation leaves a little breathing room for all the teachers and school employees that utilize Lamar City Park for the highly anticipated school year end trip to the park. Now students will not have to cross the park road to use the restroom. Kudos Lamar City Park for that improvement! And another pat on the back for the introduction of Picnic in the Park! What a great way to enjoy the park in a different way and incorporate outside food truck owners that may not be familiar with Lamar.
Currently, the City Park is the happening place to be with multiple softball, baseball and little tyke games and practices taking place nightly. The fields and stands continue to be maintained to a “tee” and host an abundance of players while the playgrounds are utilized by all the youngsters in waiting. Cook shacks emit the aroma of fresh popcorn and host lines of game goers awaiting their turn. But the best part is the sounds, the sounds of the fans lined up and down the sides of the fields cheering their loved ones along, the noise of excited chatting amongst the fans – friends, family and neighbors alike – the team chants that get stuck in your head and the crack of the bat. All the things and all the feels - bringing a sense of warmth that takes over.
So whether it’s the ball fields used in the spring and summer where teammates make memories and gain lifelong friendships, to the year round walking trail where you see members of the community walking religiously regardless of the season, to the shelters that host birthday parties and your best friends baby shower and the sports courts where you shoot some hoops with dad when he gets off work, or maybe it’s the annual Easter egg hunt you remember. Whatever the memory or association is with the City Park, it continues to serve as an essential piece of Lamar and surrounding communities. We are without a doubt a blessed community to be able to utilize this treasure.
