THE LAST RANGER: THE ETERNAL LEGACY OF CHUCK NORRIS (1940–2026)

On March 19, 2026, the world lost more than an actor; we lost the man who became the archetype for the modern American martial artist. For those of us who grew up in the 80s & 90s, Chuck Norris wasn't just a face on a screen—he was a constant. He was the reason we looked at our local dojos with awe and the reason we believed that discipline could turn a shy kid from Oklahoma into a titan of the Coliseum.

This is a tribute to the man, the myth, and the unbreakable will of Carlos "Chuck" Norris...

Jigoro Kano: The Founder of Judo

In the transition from the feudal era of the Samurai to the modern sporting arena, no figure looms larger than Jigoro Kano (October 28, 1860 – May 4, 1938). A Japanese educator and martial artist, Kano transformed the disparate, often fractured schools of ancient Jujutsu into Judo—a unified system of physical, mental, and moral pedagogy...

The snow falling over the American Northeast on St. Patrick’s Day often serves as a reminder of the harsh winters endured by the waves of Irish immigrants who built the cities of the New World. But in the 19th century, in the smoky basements of New York’s Five Points and the muddy fields of the ...

Suikoden: Outlaws of the Water Margin

ABOUT THE BOOK
This edition of Suikoden: Outlaws of the Water Margin is a retelling and creative adaptation of the classic Chinese novel The Water Margin (Shuihu Zhuan), traditionally attributed to Shi Nai’an. While it incorporates passages from the public-domain text, the narrative has been selectively abridged, restructured, and reimagined with character and place names rendered in Japanese romaji to reflect the Suikoden tradition in Japanese art.

The book features 74 original illustrations, digitized versions, of a woodburn Suikoden series created by Shoto Khan. These illustrations are based on the 74 original Suikoden pieces by Utagawa Kuniyoshi and serve as chapter headings, offering visual context and atmosphere, rather than fully illustrating the text. While some characters depicted are not fully aligned with their appearance in the story, the imagery of each scene relates in some manner to the context of each chapter.

Rest in Peace to the Japanese Ukiyo-E artist, Kawanabe Kyosai! His works have played a major influential role in providing inspiration for my woodburn projects and his life should be celebrated for his contributions to the art world!

Kawanabe Kyosai (5/18/1831 - 4/26/1889) was a renowned Japanese artist known for his mastery of Ukiyo-e, a traditional genre of woodblock printing and painting. Born in Edo (modern-day Tokyo), Kyōsai initially studied under the famous ukiyo-e artist Utagawa Kuniyoshi, gaining a reputation for his dynamic compositions, humor, and irreverent approach to traditional Japanese art. Unlike his contemporaries, who often focused on serene portraits of beautiful women or landscapes, Kyōsai was known for his energetic and unconventional subject matter, which included grotesque monsters, mythical creatures, and satirical caricatures of society. His work pushed the boundaries of ukiyo-e and helped bridge the gap between traditional Japanese art and more modern, playful visual styles.

Kyōsai's influence extended beyond woodblock prints, as he was also a skilled painter and illustrator. His works often reflected a deep sense of social commentary, incorporating both traditional and experimental elements to critique the political and cultural issues of his time. He was particularly adept at blending the classical Japanese techniques of ink painting with more contemporary motifs, which allowed his art to resonate with both the elite and common folk. Despite his fame in the ukiyo-e world, Kyōsai's later years were marked by a decline in popularity, partly due to changing tastes and the rise of Western artistic influences. However, his legacy lives on, and he is celebrated today as one of the most innovative and eccentric figures in the history of Japanese art.
