COVID-19 Slams Main Street Outdoor Recreation Businesses

"This crisis has tested the resolve of a number of industries and has tried the mechanisms by which we use the natural resources of this state and this country. Hunting and fishing make up a robust $11.2 billion outdoor recreation economy in the state of Michigan and support more than 117,000 jobs."

Showcasing the DNR: The game warden and the Yellow Drake

Who else carries a Robert’s Yellow Drake in their fly box no matter the situation?

“After some internet sleuthing, I was delighted to find a couple of great articles written about Clarence Roberts and his Yellow Drake. What made it even more special to me was finding out that he and I were kindred souls in our career paths.”

Thanks, Ryan Soulard for the phenomenal read.

It was a rainy, cool, spring day a few years ago, when my wife and I hit the water with fishing guide Ed McCoy on the Manistee River.

COVID-19 and Conservation: Splintering Systems

“I have been reminded many times during our social distancing orders that character is not created in a crisis — it is simply revealed. The same is true of our community, and this crisis is revealing fundamental flaws in our systems. However, I see this as an inflection point for conservation. We have reached a critical point at which hunters, hikers, anglers, boaters, trappers and paddlers will need to join with local, state and federal policymakers to build a system that our grandchildren can rely on.”

MUCC hopes fishing guides and ranges will be in next round of "outdoor industry" openings.

“Engaging members of the public in our outdoor spaces in a proactive manner is key to the revitalization of Michigan’s health, sanity and well-being” said Amy Trotter, MUCC Executive Director. “Our affiliates and clubs that have outdoor ranges are eager to be a part of this process and rely on members of the public to stay in operation. And our fishing guides are watching their livelihoods decimated each day.”

UPDATE: MUCC's attorney reached out to legal counsel for Governor Whitmer and requested removal of the sentence of the FAQs requiring boaters be from the same household. The Governor's office has confirmed that the "household" limitation will be immediately removed. We appreciate the Governor's cooperation in resolving this issue. Boaters MUST remain 6 feet apart from anyone outside their household.

And we appreciate our members’ continued involvement and engagement on this issue.

BREAKING: This morning, it was brought to MUCC’s attention that Gov. Whitmer's office has published an answer to a FAQ stating: "individuals not part of a single household may not boat together."

The most operative Executive Order - 2020-59 - states the opposite: "Individuals may leave their home or place of residence, and travel as necessary: To engage in outdoor recreational activity, consistent with remaining at least six feet from people from outside the individual’s household. Outdoor recreational activity includes walking, hiking, running, cycling, boating, golfing, or other similar activity, as well as any comparable activity for those with limited mobility."

MUCC’s attorney has contacted the Attorney General’s office and requested that the FAQ be revised consistent with the EO.

MUCC Win! A new executive order signed today explicitly states that outdoor activities, including boating, are now allowed while “remaining at least six feet from people from outside the individual’s household.”

“The MUCC lawsuit placed discernable pressure on the governor’s office and DNR to reconsider the unconstitutional and ambiguous language that was being enforced,” Executive Director Amy Trotter said. “The grassroots power of MUCC proved that individual anglers’ voices can be heard and that they do matter.”

MUCC filed a complaint Sunday challenging the criminal prohibition against motorboat use. MUCC supports responsible recreation while adhering to social distancing measures.

The governor and DNR have taken the position that all motorboat use anywhere in the state, regardless of waterbody, number of boaters or adherence to social distancing protocols, is criminal. Law enforcement is now enforcing the FAQs, including issuing criminal charges.

Help ensure that anglers and recreationists are not wrongfully prosecuted by joining MUCC today: http://bit.ly/JoinMUCC

Motorboating or fishing from a boat affixed with a gas or electric motor is now banned under a recent Executive Order from Gov. Whitmer.

When the first EOs were issued, the governor lauded and encouraged recreation in the outdoors as a safe haven for Michiganders’ physical and mental health.

MUCC Executive Director Amy Trotter said, “However, this EO is using a hatchet where a scalpel was appropriate and necessary.”
