Hey friends! I normally try to keep my personal life out of the hiking content, but I suddenly find myself in search of full time work and wanted to put this out into the universe. If you happen to know of anyone looking for an experienced motion graphics artist / video editor, please feel free to send them my reel. Thanks for watching and sharing!

Recently, I had the privilege to visit one of our newest National Monuments. Known simply as “Pullman”, this site officially opened its doors on Labor Day 2021. It was the great American experiment: an entire town built by and for one company. It’s a great place to spend a couple of hours - stop by the Visitor Center to get started. Keep in mind that a large portion of the monument is a residential neighborhood in Chicago, so you’ll want to speak to a Park Ranger before setting out on your own.

“Pullman National Monument tells the story of an experimental industrial town built in 1880, the sleeping car magnate behind it, and the company workers over almost a century of rail car production. Pullman is significant for two eras of labor history - the Strike and Boycott of 1894 and the African American union, the Brotherhood of the Sleeping Car Porters, during the 1920s-30s. Labor relations, transportation, urban planning, and the fight for civil rights are all part of Pullman's lasting impact on American life.” - taken from the coffee mug packaging ☕️

🔥NEW VIDEO🔥Here it is. My love letter to one of my favorite places: The Bowl of Fire. I’ve talked about it for quite some time, and I finally found the determination to finish it. Link in my bio.

I started filming this guide on March 2020. Yes, this video guide took almost 2 years to complete! After watching it you may wonder why. There’s nothing particularly special or groundbreaking here and it’s not really that clever of an edit. But if you recall, 2 years ago was when everything started to go wrong with the world. Like you, I faced many obstacles and challenges - in addition to some wonderful and unexpected moments. It became increasingly difficult to find the strength or focus to do what used to bring me such joy – creating these video guides. It felt rather pointless.

I had selfish reasons too. I didn’t want to see the Bowl become overrun with people who didn’t care for the land like so many other places in the valley. I imagined myself a bit of a gatekeeper, hoping to preserve this place that had become my new home. But then I realized that the only person being held back by that gate was me: I had become trapped by my inability to move forward. Plenty of people had written about the Bowl in the past and will continue to do so in the future. All I can do is my part to help others realize just how special of a place it is and share what is required to protect it.

Please enjoy my latest video guide “Bowl of Fire: Southwest”, and like and share with others who will join me in keeping this place beautiful and wild.

Thanks for watching❤️

Jason

Special thanks to Curtis McCain and Jocelyn Dowdy for video and photography. 🙏🔥

Bowl of Fire Full Moon Hike 12/18/21

The moon was so bright we didn’t need our headlamps for this one-of-a-kind trek through one of my favorite spots. Truly an incredible hike.

The last stop of my Missouri adventure is a place that’s close to my heart - and one of America’s newest National Parks. Welcome to Sainte Genevieve - my hometown.

Established in 1750, Ste. Genevieve is the oldest town west of the Mississippi River. It’s a place frozen in time and with the introduction of the National Parks system, will stay that way for years to come.

There are currently 7 Historic Sites and Tours available, with Ranger guided programs available throughout the day. Your first stop should be the Welcome Center - the staff is extremely helpful in guiding you around town, giving hotel and dining recommendations, and making sure your visit is an enjoyable one.

If you are planning a trip to Ste. Genevieve, expect to stay in a motel or one of the numerous bed and breakfast places in town. There’s no campsite in this National Park - you’ll need to head to Hawn State Park for the nearest one of those.

The next stop on my Missouri adventure was the Gateway Arch National Park.

“The Arch” (as it’s locally known) was established in 1935 to commemorate the westward expansion of the United States. The tram ride to the top is a must see for anyone visiting this stainless steel monument that soars to a height of 630’. In addition, the newly renovated museum and grounds are exceptionally well done, and allow visitors to more easily access the Old Courthouse - scene of the historic Dred Scott case.

On a personal note, this is my most visited National Park to date. I’ve been here more times than I can remember. It was a very popular destination for school trips and just an overall fun experience when heading to “the big city”. Growing up nearby, it was so easy to take it for granted. I’m glad I finally made it back.

For the first time in two years, I am finally able to visit my family in Missouri. This week, you can call me “Base Camp Missouri”😁…

First stop: the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, located in St. Louis and next to the picturesque Grant’s Farm. Admission is free for everything - you will need to schedule a tour with a ranger to gain entry to the home. Otherwise, the museum, visitors center and grounds are all self-guided. If you’re in the area, I highly recommend spending an hour here - learning more about this complicated man who understood the true meaning of an “American citizen” is well worth your time.

What do you think of that green? It’s called “Paris Green” and was quite popular in its day.

For the second year in a row I got to spend my birthday at Bowl of Fire. Last year I was alone and a bit apprehensive about the future. This year, I had two of my favorite souls with me and am excited for what’s to come. What a difference a year makes.
