Georgia Mother Found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity in Toddler's Drowning Death

• Asia Calabrese-Lewis, a Georgia mother, was charged with murder and child cruelty in the May 2022 death of her 1-year-old daughter, Nirvana Oliver, after allegedly drowning the child and then informing the father of the deed.

• However, on April 18, a Fulton County Superior Court judge dismissed the charges, declaring Calabrese-Lewis not guilty by reason of insanity due to a diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder with psychotic features and a history of depression.

• The court determined that, while competent to stand trial, Calabrese-Lewis lacked the mental capacity to distinguish right from wrong at the time of her daughter's death, acting under a delusional compulsion stemming from her mental illness.

• Calabrese-Lewis is currently undergoing mental health treatment at the Fulton County Jail and has been ordered for an evaluation of her current mental state by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities.
