Treadmills had 74 times more bacteria than a public bathroom faucet, while exercise bikes carried 39 times more germs than cafeteria trays. Free weights showed the highest levels, with 362 times more bacteria than a toilet seat.

The study also detected bacteria linked to skin infections, respiratory issues, and antibiotic resistant infections on several machines.
