The 80/20 rule - also known as the Pareto Principle, named after the Italian mathematician who discovered it - states that 80% of your income comes from just 20% of your actions.
The 80/20 rule is a powerful force of nature. It is a universal law that is seen in everything in life.
80% of the traffic in the US will use just 20% of the road network.
80% of the money paid to professional NFL players goes to 20% of them.
80% of a company's income and profits come from just 20% of its customers.
80% of a company's output comes from just 20% of its workforce.
80% of the planet's resources will be used up by 20% of its nations/people.
80% of your day is spent doing stuff that only really benefits 20% of your life.
80% of all cars sold will be 20% of specific makes and models.
And so on and so forth…
It isn't always exactly 80/20, sometimes it will be 75/25 or even 70/30… but generally, it is 80/20.
Understanding this is powerful because it means that for you, you can use it to your advantage.
You see, for a person who works an 8-hour shift, the most productive 20% of the day which generates roughly 80% of their income is just 1.6 hours.
If you work for yourself selling a specific service you could work out what you are doing during that most productive period of time and focus on doing more of it.
If during your work day, you do a series of specific work tasks, the 80/20 rule decrees that 20% of the tasks create 80% of the desired results and income.
When you can identify what those specific tasks are… you can work towards doing more of them.
But that will leave you with certain tasks and time - the 80% - that also needs to be done during the day, and if you are trying to spend more time working on the 20%, how do you get the other 80% done?
You outsource it.
Outsourcing is a powerful tool for growing a business. It can accelerate a business towards success, but the problem is… a lot of people get it wrong.
They outsource the more costly and complicated parts of the business to people that they know very little about.
And as they know very little about these parts of the business and the people they are hiring, they run the risk of losing a lot of money.
They are putting all of the money and faith in a complete unknown which if it all goes wrong, can be incredibly damaging to a business… especially one that is just starting out.
However…
There is another way to outsource which is far cheaper and allows you to focus more of your energy and efforts on the most important 20% of your work.
Unfortunately, very few people actually do it… and the reason very few people do it… is that they don't know about it.
