Happy National Tequila Day — and a look at how far the category has climbed.
Tequila has spent the last decade quietly repositioning itself alongside cognac and fine whiskey as a serious luxury spirits category. Long-aged extra añejo expressions, single-barrel selection programs, and collaborations with luxury crystal houses have pushed collector-grade bottles into six and seven figures.
Here's where the category currently tops out:
1. Tequila Ley .925 Diamante — $3.5 million. The world record holder, held in a one-of-a-kind platinum decanter set with 4,100 diamonds (18.5 carats), designed over 10 months by Jose Dávalos Mejía.

2. Clase Azul 15th Anniversary Edition — $450,000. A hand-painted ceramic decanter with 24-carat gold inlay, released in a run of just two bottles to mark the brand's 15th year.

3. Tequila Ley .925 Ultra Premium — $225,000. The actual Guinness World Record holder for most expensive tequila ever sold, double-distilled in copper pot stills and aged six years at Hacienda La Capilla.

4. Avión Hand Selected Reposado, Custom Label — $13,680. Buyers hand-select their own barrel and receive a custom-labeled bottle, aged 8 to 11 months with notes of caramel, vanilla, and rose.

5. Patrón en Lalique: Serie 2 — $7,500. One of only 299 hand-numbered crystal decanters made in Alsace, France, holding an extra añejo aged up to 8 years across French oak, American oak, and sherry casks.

Premiumization in tequila is no accident. It's the same trajectory cognac and Japanese whisky have followed, and it's reshaping how the spirit shows up on back bars and in collections across Las Vegas.
