"The Sacred Nugget", 1883.
This is a wonderful image full of details. Sometimes a photo can be dated by the strangest of details. Take, for instance, this beauty below. A charming scene of the Grassmarket in its quieter days we can actually date this to September 1883. Look at the adverts on the boards to the left; one of them says "The Sacred Nugget" and below it mentions the Weekly News.
A little bit of digging around and we found out that the Weekly News serialised a novel of the same name from the 8th September 1883. Written by Benjamin Leopold Farjeon, it was a novel about the Gold Rush in Australia. Benjamin himself left his hometown of Bristol to work as a gold miner down under and later worked as a journalist in Dunedin. How fitting then, that quite possibly the only remaining photo advertising one of his sixty novels was taken in Edinburgh!
Also note the 'latrine' buildings hanging out the great hall high up on Edinburgh Castle. These were removed when the remodelling of the great hall was undertaken c1888 by Hippolyte Jean Blanc.
